Evidently... John Cooper Clarke

Loved that.

First saw Johnny Clarke at a CND festival headlined by The Damned at Alex Park in the Moss back in 81/82ish, he was fuckin' amazing I was 14 back then and he blew me away.

Some years later around '90 I was on the dole for a few months and my signing on time was the same as Johnny and Nico's, in Prestwich. I used to stand in the same queue next to them and two orthodox Jews with their big hats and huge beards. It always seemed really surreal to me. Like a comedy sketch was about to start.

Great show. Just sat through The Cars and Steely fucking Dan and at last the BoS is finally on an old OGWT doing 3 numbers, first one "I Don't Wanna Be Nice".

Bliss!

Don't recall the bottle throwing. Do recall nicking some beer off Tony Wilson, though.

For a good ten minutes of the gig the sky was black with beer bottles landing on peoples' heads near me, like the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan.

Some good acts on that day: The Freshies, Harlem Spirit. I seem to remeber that Hawkwind were meant to play but didn't show up (not sure if that's right, but it was 30 years ago)... fuck I'm old.

Anyway, back to Johnny Clarke... that was the first time I ever heard "Chicken Town" in all it's effin' glory.

Yes, I remember an act cancelled but I can't remember who it was. Couldn't have been Hawkwind, though, as I remember being disappointed!

Great programme, last saw him a few years back at the Bridgewater Hall, where he was on the bill with Mark E Smith and Howard Devoto, Smith was absolute shite, whilst the Bard of Salford was sublime as ever.

I've only seen the great man twice - Green Room and Boardwalk. Brilliant both times.
