Ex-City Players You Have Rose-Tinted Glasses For

Manchester City on X: MYSTERY BLUE: It was Colin Hendry! Well done if you got it. We'll have another one for you very soon. #mcfc http://t.co/zw5sa4ndVL / X'll have another one for you very soon. #mcfc http://t.co/zw5sa4ndVL / X
I was travelling from Edinburgh to a City match four or five years back and was on the local train from Preston to Manchester Oxford Road.

At some station, a group got on the train and some of them ended up sharing our table. One of the party looked familiar to me and was trying to work out who he was. He was obviously Scottish and clearly was an ex-footballer.

I listened to what he was saying about him playing for City and searched on my phone. Eventually I worked it out. He was Colin Hendry. He was on his way to the Etihad as a hospitality host.

I always tended to associate him with Blackburn as he won the PL with them in the dramatic season finale. This was because Blackburn were constantly on TV whereas there was little coverage of his time at City.

It was an unhappy time for Colin after his wife died after complications from cosmetic surgery and he ended up being declared bankrupt.

Remember going to City with my uncle at Maine Road and him telling me about all our players and to keep an eye on Wanchope when we signed him.
For me, Wanchope epitomised our "Typical City" identity really well.

His moments of blindingly world class skill ... punctuating his otherwise clumsiness, but raw potential.

I remember Paolo would often get the ball and just start running. It'd feel like he didn't know what he was doing, and yet he'd end up somewhere beneficial. It was pure entertainment.

One of my favourite moments was durng Keegan's promotion season, I think at home ti Norwich. Wanchope skinned 4 or 5 players before squaring to someone to make an assist. While making the pass, Wanchope's boot fell off.

Loved him. Thus my username!
