Extinction Rebellion

I havent read the 40 page thread tbh but offering my 2p. More power to them. Anyone here under 40 would have heen taught about the dangers of climate change at secondary school, and decades on the rate of change still appears too slow to mitigate a future disaster. It might be alright, for some or even most, in the end, but just because you'll be a long time dead by the time the changes accelerate, doesn't absolve your part in humanities collective responsibility to preserve our climate for our grandchildren. Yunno, your kids' kids. Them. Stop arguing it, sit on the fence if you have to but denying the problem may very well, in the end, leave some blood on your hands.

If you ask me the protesters are the ones denying the problem. The problem that exist imo is that climate change is unavoidable. Our primary goal should be to adapt to climate change. Slowing/Preventing it is a stretch goal that we'd be foolish to focus solely on imo.

I don't think many people deny climate change is happening or that they are responsible but I agree with those that think it's a frenzy. Anyone over 40 knows all about them. Many of us lost money in the tech bust, are stuck in our homes due to the house frenzy and made some overtime out of the Y2K fears.

The left weaponising climate change to make green taxes acceptable.v Personally I would hose them in dog shit, call in their student loans and make these middle class weirdos go to work

Can you try and get some more stereotypes in to that post please, you are missing some.

This guy is just another angry person putting everyone else down but not really suggesting anything meaningful. In my putting him down opinion. :-)

If I'm wrong please let me know but from what I can tell the focus of the protesters and the government is still on "preventing/slowing" climate change in countries that can't "prevent/slow" climate change.

I've not heard anyone suggesting actions to "adapt" to climate change and help the most needy. For example if sea/river levels are to increase and storms are going to be more frequent wouldn't it be better to fund flood defense systems than it would be to fund saving particular habitats. Or maybe build more houses with better planning to get people out of vulnerable locations. Or prevent homelessness. Or fight drug use. Or help our kids lead a healthier life.

In my opinion all this energy is directed in a negative direction. Instead imagine if thousands of people were focusing on positive social initiatives to help each other. And in the meantime, let governments and technology focus on working with those countries where "preventing/slowing" climate change could be achieved.

At least someone out there needing help would benefit.

No he's a comedian who uses satire and social commentary as part of his act.
He does lean leftwards though.

And while what tou say is true we need to adapt to our enviroment it seems that should be natural policy from any government.

How do you know if many of these protesters aren't involved in positive social initiatives to help each other?

Yesterday they wer out in central london helping and securing safe places for homeless people to stay.

Their main focus is on the planet, but they still cimmit to other social initiatives to help those that need it.

I liked the fact they are handing out saplings for people to plant and

To say well we know it's coming so let's just adapt and accept it rather than say let's try to prevent it getting worse is not a solution to anything.

And they don't want to leave it to governments anymore, as the 40 years has shown governments will only do so much, but will shirk responsibility when they feel like.

The human race has been around for maybe 10,000 years or so. Industrial production, combustion engines around 130 or so. The earth has been around for 6-8 billion years and in that time has produced and survived ice ages and periods of great warming. The key word there is survived.

I refuse to be arrogant enough to believe we have brought mother earth to the brink of extinction in a little over a century simply by driving cars and manufacturing household goods.

This whole climate change schtick is simply a ruse to tax the air we breathe and an attempt by the affluent classes to recolonise the Costa del Sol away from the working classes by making the hard saved for fortnight in the sun so prohibitively taxed that only the affluent can afford it.

Show me action on climate change that doesn't disproportionately affect the poorest in society and I'll consider getting on board.
I haven't seen many working class families working two jobs in order to have a holiday now and again on the streets of london. I've seen plenty of white, dreadlocked trust fund twats though.
You make some great points, but I think you also have to take into account it is the capitalists funding the anti-green think tanks that also have to be held to account. They want free reign to rape the world of its resources for personal gain. The working class have as much right to those resources as the capitalists apart from they don't have the money to do the exploitation.

It is far more complex than it appears, in my opinion it is a battle over resources framed in such a way the needs of the working class are ignored. It may well be a middle class movement as it stands but ultimately the working class will pay the price because there is no way the capitalists will be paying any of the price.

You are far more likely to be a climate change sceptic if you are older, white and male. At The Global Warming Policy Foundation 34 out of 35 people are older white men and research has linked this to a particular type of reactionary masculinity who didn't so much fear that the environment was under threat, but the hegemony of the dominance of their kind of modern industrial society. They no longer feel in control of their immediate environment and see the likes of ER as a threat to their dominance and view of the world as being a resource to be exploited for the bottom line.

I know its called the Extinction Rebellion but there is no need to take it literally.

Just have a meat substitute burger every now and then. No need for the drama.

I'll fire up the diesel and drive to Greggs on my dinner to get one of their vegan sausage rolls...

Have to do my bit and all that!

I don't understand this view because surely from a survivalist point of view why would you care about capitalism or any ism?

You are letting your hatred of all things capitalist blind you from the fact that capitalism and capitalist funding is the only thing that can or is actually saving the planet.

The major energy companies and car companies etc are solely driving green change. That is why there is an electric car boom and a march towards 100% sustainable power generation.

This is why Corbyn's plans to tax them all more will mean that efforts towards sustainability and green technology will suffer!

Because I don't think Capitalism will find the answers that are needed unless their is profit in it.

I think the answer lies within the states themselves to fund the necessary means to find an answer. A green Investment bank would be a start.

I'm not against us living in a cleaner world and only a fool would argue that it is in some way wrong not to treat our planet as well as possible but I'm just naturally sceptical of those with the most telling those with the least that THEIR lifestyles have to change, that THEY will be forced to pay more and more for things they've always been able to afford whilst at the same time continuing their own habits.

How many of the middle class disruptors yesterday will be jetting off to Val D'isere this winter ?
Make no mistake if this continues a week in the sun will jump in price from about 600 quid to a couple of grand within a few years which will make little difference to the quality of life of the already affluent but will take away the highlight of many other peoples year. All in the name of 'saving the world' as , apparently, we have " 8 years left to avoid extinction" .

All whilst the protestors are saying the square root of not very much about Chinese or Indian coal powered power stations springing up all over the place.

CO2 is a natural substance. The man made variety accounts for a tiny percentage of it . if man miraculously made zero co2 overnight the drop in co2 levels would be virtually zero.

I believe the whole movement is a con and a tax on the air we breathe.

If we want to be serious about it why not propose a vastly disproportionate tax on private jets which carry a handful of people ? Why not propose a tax on huge homes with More bedrooms than people , you could have it kick in at 5 bedrooms and payable by the owner not the renter ?

To tell me that I'm killing the planet by having a beef burger whilst sporting this years Caribbean sun tan and sporting lovely dreadlocks just irritates me .

We were told in the 80s the ozone layer was permanently ruined because we used deodorant and fridges. Couldn't be repaired. The damage was done. The while was here to stay and we would all die of skin cancer.

Don't hear much if it anymore because the entirely natural hole has largely closed. Its nature.
Man is a very arrogant beast if he believes 130 years of heating his home has ruined a planet to the point of "extinction in 8 years" , a planet that has survived 8 billion years very nicely thank you.

Agree with 95% of that which for us is quite something.

Close the thread.

@Kazzydeyna has won it!

In short, it's a political movement.

When you have the body who oversees all this stuff - the IPCC - saying with 95% confidence the sea level rise by 2100 will be in the "couple of feet" range, that does not square with the "we've 8 years to save the planet" bullshit.

There are doubtless people behind these demonstrations who know full well it's bullshit, but they are using the gullible and needy to further a political anti-capitalist, anti-development, anti-technology cause. In favour of living in communes and eating lentils. That's what this is about, but most of the poor sods who've bought the scaremongering and who are wasting their time and getting arrested, are oblivious.

Anarchists whose aim is the downfall of governments.

It's about reshaping society. They cannot achieve what they want via the ballot box so they're using fear and lies instead

The aim is to make most people entirely unable to own a personal vehicle, have a holiday, live in a warm home, be in any way independent.

Most of the protestors are imo unaware, useful idiots.
The natural extension of what their leaders are demanding is cars for the rich only. Holidays abroad for the rich only. Warm homes, with time saving appliances, for the rich only.

And if they succeed, co2 levels will be pretty much exactly the same as they are now.

It's about control over the populace. Sacrifice by the many for the benefit of the few.

I think the answer lies within the states themselves to fund the necessary means to find an answer. A green Investment bank would be a start.

But it is finding the answers as has been proven. Science R&D everywhere from the private sector to the universities is driven entirely by profit.

Personally, I agree on the green investment bank and I'd invest it solely in the private sector because that is where the development will come from.

Do you think a company like Tesla or people like Elon Musk would thrive or even bother at all under Corbyn?

As far as I am concerned he could pay no tax and do whatever he wants if he solves the problem.

load of wimmin whipping their tits out to feed their babies live on the bbc this morning in westminster failing to realise that over population of the planet is the biggest problem we face, i theyre really that worried about the planet stop banging kids out, one said she had stopped flying and on her last trip took the train to geneva, you know, the one that runs on fresh air

I watched them all sat in the road yesterday, noses in the latest smartphones which are responsible for some of the largest carbon footprint in manufacturing we know.

Still they have to let everyone know how right on they are and on the tele.......
