F365 - Manchester City In The Media

I liked: "Pellegrini also has the advantage that he looks like an arthouse European movie star from 1972. He also looks like he smells of fags and brandy, which is always likely to endear you to the press pack" and also "the rebel alliance to Man Utd's Evil Empire".

I've argued on here before when you get people saying "everyone hates us" that that isn't the case. I spend half my life being complimented for being a City fan and not a United fan by fans of other clubs. He's picked up on that, that there's a residual affection for City as the Cock Up Kings. You could see that when we won the league.

I recently watched a drawn derby in a Bury pub with a reputation as a United pub and their pictures on the wall. When we scored three quarters of the place went absolutely mad, prompting the landlord to shout "Oi! This is supposed to be a United pub". It turned out that the people going mad were a mix of Blues and fans of other clubs like Bury, Liverpool etc.

Yes. There's a bit of jealousy over our windfall and when you spend the money we do, there are always going to be people taking potshots, but a lot of people seem pleased for us too. And fans of all teams are convinced that the media have it in for them in particular. Many United fans are convinced of it despite the prevailing view on here being that they get preferential treatment. And I know a Fulham fan, otherwise one of the most educated and urbane people of my acquaintance, who almost literally foams at the mouth when he addresses the topic of the media conspiracy to do Fulham down because the Establishment hates Al-Fayed (I'm not sure what excuse he'll find now they have a new owner). It's the nature of the beast.

I don't think of half of those pundits as really being ex city. They were professionals paid to play for us, with varying degrees of success. Royle, Reid, Quinn & Keegan come across as having great affection for City, but not the others.

-- Fri Sep 06, 2013 5:31 pm --

I remember walking through the concourse at Leeds railway station in my City shirt after the FA cup semi final win. People clapped me!
