FA Cup revamp!

The trouble is that giving the winners a Champions League place means one less for the top of the premiership.

So if we finished fourth and Birmingham, say, won the cup they would go through to Europe.

I am pretty sure that top 3 is going to be within our reach for the next few years at least so that conundrum shouldn't worry us..

Watching United play Crawley now and it should be kept the way it is, it's still massive for the small clubs. The problem is like me now i can sit here and watch a game on the telly rather than go and watch it. I'm at City's game tomorrow but i can guarantee it won't be a sellout because it's against Notts County and it's just easier on a sunday to put your feet up and watch it on telly, for free. Take the United game, if your a United fan why would you pay 20 quid to go and watch them put a shit team out against a pub side. It's different if the game is at their place but at home it's just a foregone conclusion in most cases.

I can remember when we got Leeds at Maine Road in the cup ages and ages ago, i was only 12. Probably one of the best games i've been too, massive atmosphere and a proper day out even though we lost 5-2 i think it was! You didn't think of the cost or it being on the telly because it was the biggest game of the season but that was because we were down the divisions. It's just no big thing for the big clubs anymore and their fans.

The reason it's become less popular is fans take it less seriously. They take it less seriously because the 'top 4' clubs take it less seriously. Those clubs take less seriously because it makes little money compared to the CL and damages their chances of a top 4 finish/ good CL run.
In other words it's a victim of the huge profits in the CL.

It doesn't have a chance unless this gap is bridged. Best thing all round is for there to be less money made by being in the CL, but that isn't going to happen.
Second choice would be a CL place for winners. Can't see that happening either.
Shame. The FA Cup used to be a great competition.

Agree.I lost interest in the F.A.Cup a few years ago now.

I haven't lost interest whatsoever, for me it's greedy owners who have priced out the working class person - so they (the fans) have become more selective over which games they attend.
The less games in attendance - the more you become disinterested.

Replays should be scrapped, costs double if your team draws.

CL place should be given to the Cup winners... it's called the CHAMPIONS league... not the: YOU CAN PLAY IN THIS EURO-TOURNEY IF YOU FINISH 4TH league.

if this means Crawley Town gaining entry into the CL then so be it.
We will gain entry into the CL on our own merits eventually, either finishing 1st in the prem or winning the FA Cup if thats what it takes.

The rags devalued the cup big time when they decided to pull out of the cup to play in that Asian Tournament a few years back.

I'm sad to say, but its called evolution.

We used to have 6 serious trophies to compete for - European Cup, UEFA cup, European Cup Winners Cup, FA, League Cup and the League Championship.

What annoys me more than anything is that the rags have created this situation.

The salford butcher and son always ran them as a commercial business.

-- Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:58 pm --

Cup final day in the '70s was awesome. It was like Jeux sans frontieres and a question of sport between opposing groups of fans.

The clubs could do a lot better than what they are. When they are on tv they must be getting some money from whoever is showing the game. So they could easy say right we will slash the prices of the tickets to the game because we have X amount coming in from the tv. And if we can get a full house with tickets say for a £5 and kids go free they might even come out with more money from the fixture than having a stadium thats not full up.
I like the cup the way it is even the replays which is for the lower leagues a huge bonus money wise. I cant see the FA dropping the replays because all of the lower league clubs will go crazy about this and there chance of making more money. To give it a champions league spot they have been saying this for a long time I cant see that happening too many greedy clubs who have been playing champions league football over the last couple of years will not want this to happen as if it did it could mean that 2 of those teams could well miss out the way the league has been going in the recent seasons.

I've not really thought this through so its probably a pretty terrible idea BUT...

...fans of Premier League clubs all seem to enjoy trips to lower league clubs, neutrals like the potential for a banana skin and lower league clubs love the chance to see Premier League teams on their patch with home advantage. Why not seed the teams so the bottom two divisions play the third and fourth round games at home? That way you avoid the formalities of Premier League teams at home to small sides with crap attendances and reserves sides.
