FA Youth Cup final 29th April 1986

Bernard Halford admitted at the reunion of the players in 2013 that 28,000 were there

They’ll know how many paid in obviously. But they’ve no way of knowing how many were actually there, as they opened up those huge grey exit doors outside J block at one point and let people just walk in.

Brilliant night.

The first leg was equally enjoyable but we would never get away with that “banter” these days.

Half our school were at this game all wearing pringle jumpers, Kappa polo necks and Tacchini bottoms, who remembers the picture pasted on a road sign at the Platt Fields end of Horton Road with Andy Hinchcliffe, Ian Brightwell, Steve Redmond, David White, Paul Moulden and Paul Lake with the words Young Guvnors, it was there for years as I remember

We were sat in the main stand and the kick off had to be delayed as they hadn`t taken into account how big the game was and literally thousands were queueing up outside. In the end they had no option to open the scoreboard end and/or the Kippax

To my knowledge the kick off wasn’t delayed. The Kippax was always down as being open, it was the North Stand that was closed. Fans were led around the track next to the pitch from the Main Stand into the North Stand while the turnstiles operators closed up in the Main Stand and went to operate them in the North Stand.

David Boyd scored in the 4th minute and ran over to the direction of the Main Stand before realising all these fans celebrating on the track were right in front of him.

When you consider the crowd at the Swamp was 7 odd thousand and close to a 50 / 50 split, yet at Maine Road there was around 2,000 rags there, the support from us Blues was magnificent

Ah OK mate this silly old fool is losing the plot as I seem to remember the game being delayed for some reason. ;)

I must be getting very old.
Don't remember the Trafford Tramps having 2k fans at Maine Road for this ?
The memory I have from the match, was that City were dominant and controlled the game.
At the time, City seldom did this in a Derby game, so the optimism during and after the match was a rare emotion..
