Fabio Coentrao

Should we sell Kolarov if we get this guy?

I would rather keep Kolarov and stop playing him at the wing

Yes we need both, Kolarov is a leftback only where as Coentrao can play left back but also further forward. They can cover for each other if injuries/rest requires or play both in a 442 or Coentrao in Barry's position. I think he is more versatile than VDW and would therefore put him ahead if we had a choice.

-- Mon Mar 07, 2011 3:52 pm --

With Manure looking like they have got Pastore, it is even more important a deal for this guy is put in place asap. He is a superb player and just what we need. LB/WB/LMF who else can play all three positions very well for circa 25mill. Could be a very good financial purhase and sorts out our left side once and for all. This guy is so versatile.
I watched a lot of him and Van Der Wiel over the weekend, and if Wiel will cost less, I say lets get Wiel instead. Either will do.

What did you think of them? I cant really see any alternatives to these 2.

I think we need to try to buy Leighton Baines from Everton. For me, he is best solution for left back position. He and Kolarov will be able to play whole season at very best level.

Coentrao was poor against Braga this weekend. Braga has a pesky Right sided player called Alan. And he gabe Coentrao a tough time. Also a lot of balls came thru his wing. However he was often not the one picking the player up at the time. Either he had drifted in defending Alan or he was upfield when it happenned.

Even his offense was a bit off. Granted they went a man down after 45 minutes so the defense had to stay back. Wiel on the other hand had a very good game against Alkmaar. Looked the better of the 2 this weekend. By the way Wiel can probably play RM comfortably. Just like Alves does sometimes for Barca.

Oh by the way, there is a kid on Ajax that has impressed me on 3 occasions now, Vurnon Anita. He is a right footed Leftback. Kinda like Lahm. He is fast tenacious and a sure tackler.

He is a bit on the short side. But if you want a shutdown fullback, I believe this kid will be one of the good ones in a year or so. Rumor is that he is close to becoming the next Oranje starting LB. Really like the kid. Not fancy or as offensive as say a Coentrao. But dependable, and extremely hard to beat. Even scored this weekend.

Why are people comparing Vdw to Coentrao? Vdw is a right back.

Zabaleta is not a left back. But he still has to cover Kolarov, because Kola is playing too much.

Coentrao had maybe a bad game against Braga, but so what? He has been very good this season and is still improving....one bad game doesn't change that.

the real reason is kola cant defend to save his life or attack but his shot seems to make him an amazing attacking fullback

He plays Zaba as the left back against big teams. When we need the better defending option. But he plays Kolarov as left back against smaller teams.

Unless Kola needs rest. But no1 can deny that Kolarov has gotten pretty much game time recently.

Some of his poor performances are probly because he has been tired.

the guy has a shooting problem he'll shoot from anywhere but if he worked on his passing and all control hell be a good lb but the lack of pace prevents him from being a great lb (well in this league anyway)

From what I understand Van Der Weil is two footed so can play LB or RB, where as Coentrao is a left sided player who can play LB/LWB/LMF.

There appears to be pros for both players and therefore which player we go for is probably connected to who we else are after in midfield i.e. which combinations are likely to suceed with the following players Hazard, Sanchez, Mata, Hamsik, Coentrao and Van De Weil (left Pastore out as it looks as though he's going to the rags).

Dax what's your take on the "Magic" combination?

You are right that Vdw is two footed. He played left back earlier on his career.

Anyways..im happy with Vdw or Coentrao....whoever we'll get.

Not sure if he wants to come here if we offer him left back position.
