Did I mention I'd been on Eggheads?
Fuming!
Was meant to be a 9am test but due to the storms the centre opened at 10am so there was already a backlog for the two instructors.
I wait in the car having done the paperwork and he comes over, asks me to wind the window down. I do so and he says ''before we start you must demonstrate the hand signals''.
'What hand signals?'' I replied.
He begins to tell me there are hand signals I have to know should the indicators / lights not work. Told him I hadn't a clue, but stuck my left arm out and said 'left', then put the left arm out and sticking upwards and said 'right'.
He then said 'there's one more'. I said 'I don't know what it is'. He said 'it is stop'.
- thought about it and stuck my hand forward out of the window in a 'halt' signal.
I was told to read it up in my manual and re-apply for the test and he walked off to the next car......
I didn't even leave the car park!!
I said to him 'oh well, just as well I can still drive on my UK licence' and off I drove ha ha ha.

So; no need to panic then? That was an interesting anecdote, thanks for that!

That's a great retort, shame you didn't say it before he'd walked away to the next car though, then he may have heard you.

What's the point in taking a test then?

Because my UK licence is only valid for a year after my residency in the States began.
I have till the end of November to get it.

-- Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:23 am --

He did hear me! When we were going through the paperwork I had to show it him, so he knew I was driving on it.
He didn't make a comment at all, just carried on to the next car.

Ha ha! That's the sign! I know it now having looked in the manual!

You hadn't read the manual prior to the test?

Why are you "fuming" that you failed it then? If you couldn't be bothered to do the revision, is it any wonder he failed you?

Move along (on your english license only), & take your sob story with you!

Next!!!

Thats bullshit! I didn't have to do that on my test, hell I didn't even have to parallel park (good thing cause I still can't barely). What state are you in?

Wow. I didn't think it was possible to fail a US driving test given that it's basically a national ID card scheme. Maybe I've just been lucky with the states I've lived in since I moved here.
Florida - drive for 60 seconds around a supermarket car park. (I'm not kidding)
New Jersey - theory test only and had to get 80% IIRC
Ohio - same as NJ, but some of the questions were utterly bizarre and involved scenarios that don't appear anywhere in the state drivers handbook.

Is it a separate test for each state or if you pass in one, is it then legal in others ?

If you pass your test you can drive anywhere in the US, but if you take up residency in a new state you have to get one of their licenses. The grace periods and test requirements can differ greatly from state to state. I think in Ohio you have something like 30 or 60 days to get their license, though I didn't get around to it for a year.

I'm going out on a limb here and saying the "hand signals" check was a quick way for them to clear the backlog. He'll have known virtually no-one will know the answer so he doesn't have to go off driving anywhere, 2 minutes and 1 driving test off the list. I imagine he gets paid the same regardless of whether he actually gets in the car or not!!

I didn't have to do any of that in Florida. Not even parallel parking because its not common there.

Yes I did read the manual as 5 or 6 weeks ago I had to do the test on the computer on the rules of the road etc. Presumed all the questions were done with and it was about being able to drive today!
Spoke to afew people at work and they all said 'that's Massachusetts for you'! .
