Favourite Bassist

Great to see Sir James Paul getting his place in the sun; his actually playing ability is often overlooked. JPJ is a given.

But I'll throw a couple more in too, who probably won't be mentioned because they weren't in The Smiths or part of the Madchester scene: Greg Lake and Andy Fraser.

True, Lake doubled up on guitar and bass, but his talent is often underrated while his dexterity is often overlooked. Have a look on YouTube at how many students of the guitar attempt to tackle his acoustic guitar on From The Beginning.

Fraser was about 16 when Free recorded their first album, Tons Of Sobs. Nuff said.

Peerless musicians all.

Mick Karn from japan

Great call...another fave of mine

As is Lemmy....listen to his playing on Hawkwind's Space Ritual album....class.

Mick Karn has recently been diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer and is struggling in Cyprus (where he lives) to cover medical costs. Stars he has worked with in the past, including Midge Ure are organising fund raising events to help. All the best to him.
