Favourite ever stand-out season for individual player

Favourite ever stand-out is a tricky one, but if we’re looking for players who had a season that was head-and-shoulders above any other season they had…

Kinkladze was obviously a shining light in the otherwise-diabolical 95/96 relegation season.

Mark Kennedy in the second Royle promotion season. Most of the good stuff that we did came through him.

I can’t pick one from the Keegan promotion season, which was one of my favourite ever, because there were too many so no one single player stood out. How do you choose between Berkovic and Benarbia in midfield or the goal machines of Goater and Huckerby up front? You’d have to pick Benarbia I guess but it’s tricky.

The later 2000s all sort of morph into a sort of greyness with no particular stand out until the Thaksin takeover, but even then can anyone really recall anyone having a stand-out memorable season from the Hughes years?

After that - as others have already said above. Yaya in particular.
Danny Tiatto was also an unsung hero of that Keegan season, had a great year
Of those not yet mentioned, I’d add Trevor Francis’s one and only season with us. Was probably a genuine PFA player of the year contender until his injury

Would we say Sergio's first year with us?
We certainly realised from day one v Swansea that he was an absolute golden boy.
And while it was a team effort all the way through, it may have been his impact that (quite literally vs QPR) shot us that bit further in the year that Roberto took the handbrake off... all the way to the promised land...

Ya Ya Toure in the 2013/14 season - immense. 20 goals from midfield in a title winning team. Iirc Gerrard - who was a peripheral force by then - was laughably given POTY.

KDB in 2017/18 - absolutely immense. Big goals and big performances aots.

Erling Haaland 2022/23 - debut season in England and pots 52 - 52! - goals in a team that won the treble.

For me it is Yaya 2013/14 for a City player.

What about non-City players?

I guess you could take any of Ronaldo at Real Madrid or Messi at Barcelona's seasons.

But what about:

Fernando Torres first season at Liverpool was pretty special.

Frank Lampard 2009/10 - 27 goals from midfield

Harry Kane 2014/15 - 31 goals in all comps in his breakthrough season

Thierry Henry 2003/04 - 39 Goals in 51 Games in all comps.

John Stones 2022/23 just beating Haaland in the same season.
YaYa 2013/14.
YaYa 2011/12 just beating Sergio in the same season.

Some of my personal faves:

Ali Benarbia 2001-02
Andy Cole + Darius Vassell 2005-06
Stephen Ireland 2008-09
Yaya Touré 2013-14
İlkay Gündoğan 2020-21
