Favourite Joy Division song

It used to be Atmosthere until I made a wedding film for my best mate last year.
I heard the song so many times during the editing stage that I'm sated.

So I'd have to say Transmission.
Impossible to hear the song without thinking if Ian's intense dancing.
The most mesmerizing frontman of all time.

I'm sure a lot will say Love will tear us apart, but for me nothing is better than Shadowplay.

It's just poetry with a moody riff behind it.

With you all the way mate. Awesome tune. I still listen to it often and at high volume. The guitar riff is just beautiful... A bright voice in an ocean of darkness.

24 hours

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride
What once was innocence, turned on its side
Grey cloud hangs over me, marks every move
Deep in the memory of what was love

Oh, how I realised, I wanted time
Put in perspective, tried so hard to find
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way
Destiny unfolded, watched it slip away

Excessive flashpoints, beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out, see what we can find
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires

I never realised, the lengths I'd have to go
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know
Just for one moment I heard someone call
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all

Now that I've realised how it's all gone wrong
Got to find some therapy, this treatment takes too long
Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway
Got to find my destiny before it gets too late

Heart and Soul

A journey that leads to the sun,
Soulless and bent on destruction,
A struggle between right and wrong.
You take my place in the showdown,
I'll observe with a pitiful eye,
And humbly ask for forgiveness,
A request well beyond you and I.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

An abyss that laughs at creation,
A circus complete with all fools,
Foundations that lasted the ages,
Then ripped apart at their roots.
Beyond all this good is the terror,
The grip of a mercenary hand,
When savagery turns all good reason,
There's no turning back, no last stand.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

Existence well what does it matter?
I exist on the best terms I can.
The past is now part of my future,
The present is well out of hand.
Heart and soul, one will burn.
One will burn, one will burn.
Heart and soul, one will burn.

Brilliant.

Joy Division tunes have out-lasted New Order. They sound much fresher and are still relevant. IMHO

-- Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:28 pm --

OK you've got me on one now...

How about this too...

they changed my life when i heard them about 15 years ago. it was like bring hit with a sledgehammer.

before that it was floyd/ hendrix/ the doors - nothing wrong with that i know, but you can relate to joy division. they sang about the same things we see growing up around the northwest.

i love new order as well. seen them twice and they were brilliant.

(apart from bernards dad dancing and 'whoooo!' half way through songs..)

the lyrics are so prophetic of what was to come. New dawn Fades especially.

Moby does a stunning cover version on the 24 hour party people CD

And are all aware Peter Hook and Friends are doing a gig playing Unknown Pleasures right through at FAC251 later this year?

Not posted for yonks, but felt the need to get involved in this one.

Decades off Closer for me.

Here are the young men, a weight on their shoulders
Here are the young men, well where have they been?
We knocked on doors of Hell's darker chambers
Pushed to the limits, we dragged ourselves in
Watched from the wings as the scenes were replaying
We saw ourselves now as we never had seen
Portrayal of the traumas and degeneration
The sorrows we suffered and never were free

Some say it was his cry for help, or even suicide song.

Anyway, I was a little bit too young to see them but there music is as good now as it was then.

I actually knew Ian Curtis back in the day before he was in joy division, almost got bloody killed with him once. A lovely person he used to give me albums and turned me onto loads of good music of which id never heard. Went to see them at Bowden Vale my friend was the dj so we were there for the soundcheck...hadnt seen Ian for years and kept out of the way but he clocked me and ran the length of the hall to say hiya grinning all over his face, not an ounce of crap in him .
All the early stuff for me ....it was great to see it all happening for them .....really it was ....cried when he went.
