Favourite musical (Films and Plays)

High Society, On the Town and Hello Dolly on film. Not keen on anything by Rogers and Hammerstein.
Enjoyed My Fair Lady and They're Playing our Song at the theatre.
Saw School of Rock in the West end but once you have seen the film version it isn't the same. Wife and Daughter have seen Back to the Future and enjoyed it but it wouldn't be the same for me.

Guys & Dolls
Oliver!
Jesus Christ Superstar
Singin' in the Rain
Anchors Aweigh
On The Town

I've never liked musicals at all. They remind me of depressing Sundays, wintery days in the early 80s and visiting relatives who'd always seemed to have them on the TV as there was nothing else on.

However, my wife loves them and over the years I've had to endure them on the TV and in theatres. I still don't like them but I'd say I like the music on Les Mis and I appreciate the genius of the Wizard Of Oz. I wouldn't want to watch them again though.

There's only one musical I've genuinely been blown away by and that's Gypsy by Mossley Amateur Dramatics. Seriously. I was blown away by the stage show, the quality of acting and singing. I couldn't believe these were amateurs, they were a cut above anything I'd endured at The Lowry, West End, Broadway or Palace. If I had to watch another musical, I'd probably pick something by Sondheim it was that good.

Calamity Jane. (Not Calamity James)
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (that barn scene - brilliant)
Paint Your Wagon
Love those Wild West musicals.

Mrs J goes to see them but not for me , don't mind signing in the rain once every 10 years but can't stand Oliver hate it with passion

A guilty pleasure, way too many to list but I tend to prefer the 50's stuff with the likes of Gene Kelly, Ann Miller, Cyd Charisse, Danny Kaye etc

Interesting that there's a new West Side Story coming out next month. I'd have thought impossible shoes to fill, even fir Speilberg. It's also based more on the original stage show so it may be a little different from the film.

WSS one of the few musicals I like, mainly for Bernstein's great score. If that trailer is anything to go by, the new version will be brilliant.
