Me and a friend had an interesting and fun conversation in the pub the other day, concerning a conversation that Ferguson and Bobby Robson had. Post match, Robson recounted in his autobiography (which is an excellent read by the way, and I implore every football fan to read it) that him and Ferguson sat there and both admitted that they just absolutely LOVE poachers. At the time, Ferguson has Van Nistelrooy and Robson has Shearer and they both admitted that throughout their careers, they have loved watching a good poacher and bought them even when they weren't needed, just because they liked the way they play.

Anyway, we got talking about our own favourite types of players and it was a good conversation. Which is YOUR favourite? Is it the hard as nails defensive midfielders? The tricky wingers who dart in and out? The big, tall, old fashioned centre back? The understated, intelligent centre mids who run the game? The silky forward who drops deep? The 'fox in the box' poacher? The ball playing centre back? Creative centre mid?

Obviously we like them all, but which one is your favourite? Which is the one that, when you see a truly talented one, gets you excited to watch them play?

I actually had to have a bit of a think about this when asked, but I realised that my favourite types of players are definitely fast, attacking wing backs. I love wing backs hwo can stick a tackle in at one end, pass to a winger then charge down the overlap to loop an inch perfect ball across. They add width to the pitch and give extra men in midfield. Mostly though, it's because when I see a really, really good one, I instantly want him at City as there are so few good ones. I have a thing about defenders who can dribble with the ball anyway, but add in the pace and width of a good winger, with the crossing ability and I love to watch them. I suppose Dani Alves is the archtype at the moment, but there's being a few good ones in the past. Glen Johnson looks good at the moment, and I curse us that we didn't sign him (as I rated him at Pompey).

Richards and Bridge are actually pretty good for us at this job. Richards crossing is a bit meh, and Bridge comes far too centrally for me, but they are the closest things that we have.

The second striker type players have always caught my eye. I used to love watching Bergkamp (who didn't?!) but people like him and Sheringham (for England and Spurs, not the rags!) are the best examples. Players who have that mix of creativity and goal scoring ability.

Gerrard type midfielder, puts tackles in, can pick out a pass aswell as drive forward and bang in some goals.

Yes, a proper midfield general. Hate this modern 'defensive midfielder' crap. An excuse for poor ability. The best, like Colin The King, Souness etc could tackle like demons and pass and score like strikers.

Deep lying playmakers. The guy that gets on the ball and dictates the team's play. The quarter back of football if you like. Xavi.

Nice to see so much variety on here.

I nearly went with tricky wingers to be honest.

For City: Ali B, Berkovic and last season's Stevie I. Elsewhere: Zidane, Xavi, Pirlo, etc.

Rene Higuita type of goalie. Sad to say haven't seen another one yet

Seriously since I will never see another scorpion goalie again in my lifetime. Heres my real choice. As a coach I sometimes try a 'power or fast forward' as a wing back. Simply because in general they can dribble & have the pace to neutralize opposition forwards. To be a good & profilic striker obviously they have the court sense to score and thereby hopefully the nous to 'defend' against another striker . These are the attributes I look for in a great wing back.

When City started of on a buying binge of strikers and fowards (castigated by others as overloaded with strikers) we were panned but to me it would have been a godsend to deploy them in certain positions.

Thats why I would clamour for players like Maicon, Alves and or Juan Manuel Vargas. We have one in young Micah (who needs a bit more refining as a wingback in defending).

No nonsense, holds the ball up,fearless, put the head in where it hurts, centre forward.shearer was an awesome example.two(possibly surprising) players i currently admire are davies and doyle.uwe was/is my idol.

granite hard centre back/ leader.

andy morrison is probably my favourite player to have pulled on the city shirt. all about the context of that season and how he dragged the club out of that league by it's nutsack.
