Favourite Type of Player?

Deep lying playmakers. The guy that gets on the ball and dictates the team's play. The quarter back of football if you like. Xavi.

This for me.

Andrea Pirlo has been my favourite player in world football for many years, I could sit and watch him or Xavi or say Riquelme play football all day long. To be able to make everyone else around them impact on the game through the choices they make and the vision and execution they display is a pleasure to observe.

When I see footage of the Brazil 1970 team it's Gerson who I enjoy the most cos again the way he sets the pace and direction of the play is just fantastic.

I still hope that Stevie Ireland can become man for us.

Hahaha that is just downright spooky! I was about to quote Kenzie myself and then mention both Pirlo and Gerson!
My favourite player has always been the metronome of the side. The creative fulcrum who dictates the pace and rhythm of the game. They first look to spray it wide but if such an option isnt on they're happy to keep it simple and retain possession.

Schweinsteiger has recently been deployed for this role at Bayern to great effect. The coach Low was using two destructive defensive midfielders and the team was struggling. He moved Schweinsteiger in from out wide and has kept the same shape but - as Kenize brilliantly describes it - now has a 'quarterback' in there.

Beckenbauer was the master and for years I've had a framed picture of him upon my wall. Looking imperious. Used to love watching Molby too and in recent times I'd happily watch Liverpool purely for Alonso.

I hate to say it but the nearest British equivalent is Carrick. There are times when he'll spray a forty yarder out wide and I'll actually find myself willing it to succeed. Granted I then want the recipient of the pass to crumple to the turf and tear a cruciate but I want the pass to succeed.

Xavi and Fabregas are two other candidates but both are too mobile for me to fully deserve inclusion. I prefer my quarterbacks to be almost stationary and 'conduct'. Vierra...oh you could have been that man for us! Still might perhaps.

A Midfield maestro.

An Iniesta type player, can run at full speed and the ball is under complete control. It's amazing to watch. Not too shabby at winning the ball either. Pure skill makes him the player he is.

Yep I'll hold my hands up I admire Carrick too, I was pained when he signed for them lot and the sooner he leaves the better! . I remember watching him on 'Player Cam' (do sky still do that?) for West Ham one night and his performance was really top notch, I don't think he gave the ball away once and was always there to recieve it and move it on, no matter the pressure. When I first saw Michael Johnson in the youth cup final my initial thought was 'he could be our Carrick'

Many might disagree but one of my favourite players to watch in the premiership is Frank Lampard. He's not the all action midfielder with bursting runs with the ball at his feet like Gerrard can be but his use of the ball is outstanding and up there with the best. What he does with ease is create space for himself and is always available for a pass, his movement when he doesn't have the ball is outstanding and he can influence matches without doing easy on the eye things such as beating a man with a bit of skill

Of course there are players out there who have probably more skill than Lampard but in terms of his football brain and use of the ball he's outstanding and i enjoy watching him play apart from against us of course

I love football but I hate modern footballers! They are far far too fuckin soft! I hate the way they roll about on the floor when theirs nowt up with them (Rosicky on Sat!)! I hate the diving when nobodies near them! I hate the head-to-head, pushing and shoving, ridiculous thinking their hard as fuck squaring up to each other; when nothing actually happens and everyone knows it'd be a fuckin embarrassment to men if they actually did kick off!

However,

I like big athletic strikers who are good in the air, quick, strong, skillful and score many goals! Like Mario Gomes and Edin Dzeko, and Adebayor when he puts the effort in!

I like terriors who never give up running and working for the team, like Tevez and Dickov!

I also like the utility players who will fit in anywhere for the team whenever asked and put in a great shift, like Zabaleta or even Sun Ji Hai! Remember that game against Chelsea when Sun was awesome - brilliant!

I'm not saying that he is the best player ever (it's a question with no answer and I didn't see the likes of Pele, Cruyff, etc) but I've never enjoyed watching a player more than Zidane.

As much as Kinky is my favourite City player and Messi is amazing and even the two Ronaldos are/were really, really good, I don't see the artistry in what they do as much as with Zidane.

The above are all dribblers. Some with amazing skill, some with skill and power. They do it better tha 99.9% of players and they have amazing skill but Zidane was an artist. He could do what he wanted with the ball and had complete mastery over it. He was an artist. The ball was part of him in a different way than how it seems to be attached to Messi's or Kinky's foot when they dribble.

I sometimes wonder that I detract from the likes of Messi when I view him in this context next to Zidane. His dribbling skills are just as outlandish as Zidane's complete control of the ball and maybe just as rare a skill. I also probably have a tendency to under rate his passing and vision because I see him as "a dribbler."

Don't get me wrong, the likes of Messi could, in a few years, have an excellent argument to be the best ever. But I still wouldn't see him as as much of a 'pure' footballer as Zidane.

That's the sort of player I most admire at the very highest level. I can appreciate loads of other different types but Zidane took football close to art when he played imo. Something different that you rarely see. Give me 90 minutes of that over a Ronaldo smacked free kick or his pace and power runs that rely as much on physical attributes as footballing ability.

Oh, and another nice touch about Zidane was that despite being able to do every trick you can think of, he rarely did one where it wasn't needed. Unlike some much les talented show ponies I can think of.

A strange thing to say as everyone in the world knows Zidane was an unbelievable player! but I think he was actually underrated, for some reason I don't think he was lorded to be the best in the world enough! He was absolutely excellent - and a bit of a hard lad for a footballer, took no shit off anyone!

This post has just reminded me that Rosicky is another one I'd add to my list of deep playmakers. I hate how Wenger uses him coming in from the wings, it's a compete waste. His performances at the base of the midfield for the Czech Republic prior to joing Arsenal were sensational. He exuded an air of complete control, like the game revolved around him.

To widen this out a little, I'd be interested to know does your favourite type of player reflect or influence the way you yourself play 5/7/11 a-side? I've always got much more of a buzz from setting up a goal than scoring one, don't know why. Moments where I've played an incisive pass that takes two men out of the game, or switched the play when I'm under pressure are more memorable to me than goals I''ve scored.

players with skill, pace and runs at defenders e.g. swp kinkladze robinho aj bellers henry messi ronaldinho

Good call on Zidane. I do agree that the likes of fake Ronaldo, for whom a large part of their ability is purely physical strength, speed and so on, are somehow less appealing (even though this is, strictly speaking, illogical - physical strength and speed being a mixture of talent and hard work just as 'pure' footballing ability is).

But then logic doesn't come into it as this is fundamentally an aesthetic debate. I do like a mobile, strong, intelligent and skilful centre forward (e.g. Christian Vieiri and a pre-injury Shearer, as well as Adebayor). I also like a centre back with timing, anticipation and ability on the ball. An old 'libero' type if you will, such as Lothar Matthaus.

But I guess the players I like the most are playmakers of one type or another. I think my favourite all-time is Roberto Baggio: he had everything in his locker, shooting, passing, dribbling, vision, speed, athletic grace, courage.

i like players who appear to have ice cold blood running through their veins when 99% of players would panic. my list of examples includes gascoigne, zidanne, romario, the real ronaldo, stoichkov and hagi. probably the player i've most enjoyed watching though throughout my 31 years was thierry henry in his prime for arsenal. that team was truly fucking awesome to watch. loved sol campbell, patrick vieira, dennis bergkamp, freddie ljundberg and robert pires. henry was different class though. i'm thinking of games vs. u****d when barthez passed to him and villa away when pires lobbed the keeper. there was a time when i would specifically set out to watch them if they were on sky and i've never done that for any team other than city or england. two red mates were debating one day when henry and van nisterooy were at their peaks, who was the better player. one went henry and one went with the cheat. to me it was like comparing the stone roses to jedward. his arrogance sometimes irked me, that non-plussed look when he scored but his football was breathtaking. anyway, enough of the arsenal love-in. you get my point.

players like tevez, dickov, bellers who give 100% for the cause even if we lose at least those kind of players usually give their all.I remember when we got stuffed by boro and micheal ball just stood ther and shrugged his shoulders when they scored and didnt care less, from that moment i thought he should never play for us again.

Forgot to add that I also love the cool-as-fuck players like the great Franco Baresi.
A guy who oozed class and style...but was also as dirty as they come.
I love the anecdote from the gormless twat Platt when he said after a game in which Baresi had not given him a kick all game they swapped jerseys. And Baresi's Milan shirt was bone-dry and still smelt of expensive cologne.

Bellamy or Tevez.

They give their all and get the odd goal here and there. They contribute to attacking play, and defending. Players that work hard for their team, unlike Robinho (who thinks the world owes him something because he stepped foot in this country). Bellamy and Tevez also know how to link up with eachother, and this has really helped us this season with alot of our goals. Even Adebayor has contributed afew goals, but the reason not many people like him is because he doesn't put himself about as much as we'd like him to. He has a striek rate of 1 in 2, and yet people don't like him purely because of his work-rate. People will always like the players who try hardest, rather than the players who score most. However, if you do both you're on to a winner.
