I've always said that if City went bust, and we very nearly did, I would not bother with football again. I'd watch it on the telly but my club would be gone. The football love of my life would be dead.
If City pissed me off so much that I couldnt or wouldnt go anymore that would be it. I wouldn't set up another little pretendy club of my own. And call it City. It's just mad.
I therefore come to the conclusion that these guys are not mad or bad. They are just not real football fans. This is politics and they should point this out to the dwindling bunch who still bother to go up to to Bury.
I'm not likening FCUM to AFC Wimbledon, but if City were faced with the MK Dons situation and were moved, and a new club was set up AFC Manchester City, what would you do ?
There are legitimate reasons why fans might set up a new club, and AFC Wimbledon is a good example of that, whilst FCUM isn't one of them. I can see both sides of the FCUM argument, and understand to some degree why it was set up, many of the "hardcore" united fans were already disillusioned with united (and football more generally - it wasn't as simple as not winning trophies, or glazer doing his own thing), and saw this as a new way to have a football club owned and run by the fans, for the fans. However when it came down to it many couldn't remove "united" from their system, and no matter how good the buzz is, watching NW Counties football is not quite the same as a champions league final is it ? So ultimately they still follow united as well, many by still going to games, so its a myth it was really about their football fix, and for that reason they are not true supporters of either club. I also know that quite a few saw it as a chance to carry on their "hardcore" united activities, outside of mainstream football in a lower profile, and its hard to have anything but contempt for them, especially when they have gone to small clubs and intimidated them, causing mayhem in places simply not set up for it.
I hope that they fail to raise enough money, or get planning permission for a stadium, because while they may have put some much needed gate money into the coffers of local clubs for one season, they haven't actually helped or added anything to grass roots football at all.
Its all a bit rich when their fans come on here and then complain about City buying trophies (maybe one day), when that is just what they've done at the lower level, much like their former club have also done.
