It does seem a huge amount of money especially when you consider his age but when I saw him play against Chelsea last year he was the best player on the pitch by a mile.

What was his teams formation? what position did he play? and what did he do particularly well that day?

He scored a good goal, his first touch control overall was poor, but had good pace and quick, he missed a defencive header from a corner that lead to Chelskis goal.

Someone who actually did watch the game and did know who Fernandinho was prior to July 2013...... Cheers.

fernandinho was excellent vs plzen. he was doing the holding job while toure was doing the attacking.

when fernandinho wins the ball he can immediately initiate a counter attack, whereas when barry or garcia won the ball they'd just slow down the game and let the opposition park the bus.

i can see us winning vs bayern munich. we will hit them on the break with jesus navas, aguero and dzeko upfront. i cant wait.

Thank you Sir.)

Over to you FantasyIreland & jumpers ;)

He had a great game on Tuesday night.

As a fan watching your team live (either at the game or on TV)) you to are too 'in to it' and tend to concentrate on where the action is.

I got to see the game after work yesterday, already knowing the result, I could relax and see other things going on in the game.

Fernandinho played a blinder. His positional awareness is great,, especially when covering the defenders who were out of position having gone forward/lost possesion. Also he appeared to win everything in the air. A few of his passes missed the mark but this will improve as he begins to understand his new team mates better.

We didn't.

Did.

<a class="postlink" href="http://shakhtar.com/en/news/27109" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://shakhtar.com/en/news/27109</a>

On 6 June, FC Shakhtar and Manchester City reached an agreement regarding the transfer of the Pitmen’s midfielder Fernandinho to the English club. The Citizens signed the Brazilian for 40 million euros.

when tevez signed the media stated the fee was £47m , but this included the £20m signing on fee paid over the length of his contract , so fernandinho probably actually cost £20m plus other fees etc. The media and sky like to double our transfer fees , so when we play teams like viktoria plzen who cost £2m or wigan athletic who cost 5 pence , they can compare it against the team we fielded that cost £250m , its just another stick the rag media can beat us with , its getting quite tedious now.

It wasn't the media that reported how much we paid for him it was the selling club (Shakhtar) on their own website. People keep saying that they did that to appease the fans... I call BS on that, take your blue tinted glasses off... this is what we paid for him and it will be confirmed in the official financial reports at the end of the season anyway. If you chose to cling onto this fantasy that we made some kind of arrangement with Shakhtar, allowing them to publically state that we paid them €40m just so their fans are happy then you're quite honestly delusional imho. And by way they clearly say that this is what we paid *to them* ... so this does not include his wages.

Yes that's the number Shakhtar announced but because Fernandinho put in a transfer request he had to give up money owed to him which Shakhtar added to the sale price. Which technically would be true as to how much they recieved to sell him but not what we actually paid for him.

Am I bad for thinking (aside from the newcastle game) he's done absolutely nothing?
You'd be wrong. He was very good at Plzen. That said, he'd never be a 34 million pound player. just a pretty good one. Should have cost 18 to 20 million.

What's being annoying me so far this season, well, up until the Plzen game anyway, was that I thought be bought Fernandinho as a Barry replacement yet we seem to playing Yaya where Gareth was and Fernandinho where Yaya was.

It all changed against Plzen and Yaya and Fernandinho switched to the positions I thought they would start originally, and if anything it worked far better than what we have seen so far.

Yaya excels going forward, but he needs that Barry player to sweep up for him and thread him balls, playing Yaya as a defensive midfielder in our side is just a waste, he can't hack the pressing from opposing strikers and he struggles when opposition attacking players turn him.

I just hope to see Fernandinho playing deeper from now on with Yaya doing box to box duties.

While you are right that Fernandihno may have been bought to play the holding role, it was clear in preseason he was taking some time to adapt. If I were to guess, I'd say MP pushed him up and brought Yaya lower, because of Yaya's ability to keep clean possession until Dihno was fully up to speed. Besides, Dihno is better than Yaya at closing players down quickly. So it stands to reason that MP might have tried to use Dihno higher up to help that early pressure style he wants his team to play.

Against Plzen however, Yaya was very good at early pressure. On multiple occassions he jumped out and immediately attacked the Plzen player on the ball. However his pressure wained in the 2nd half once he got tired. Good thing he was subbed, as he had slowed down in the last 10 minutes before he was pulled. I like the testing MP is doing. It will take some time, but best to test out all the pistons, until the right balance is found.

I think its a shame to restrict him to a holding/defensive role as he has much more to his game than that,he is pretty much the complete midfielder being more suited to the box to box role than any of our other options.

Right now, like Dax states,i think the boss is simply experimenting with the optimum balance and line up,hence our inconsistent/disjointed start to the season.

I do believe we are still missing that specialist midfielder that excels in the destroyer role, someone like Sandro perhaps,a player that would probably better compliment Fernandinho.

Bollocks we need players to compliment Yaya he is one of the few world class talisman that we have in the side. If Fernandinho ain't up to it then we should never have bought him and hung on to Barry.

You're missing my point Mike.

Fernandinho and Yaya excel in a similar role, they would both be better complimented by a more 'disciplined' colleague.

For that reason,i believe having the two as our centre pairing isn't as effective a midfield as we could have, especially so,as has been evident, when Kompany is missing.

Fernandinho is certainly up to it,he is a superb player but different to Barry, that comparison is wrong.

As for Yaya being world class,we have a very long thread for that topic........

On another side, have you all noticed how good his English is already. It's not fluent but it's
bloody good for only a month of learning. I remember him saying it wouldn't take him long,
but bloody hell. Fair play that man.

It's early days

There are a lot questioning pellers. However it's a new team with new key players. Last transfer window didn't include that many ready made first team players. Mainly subs.

The fulcrum of the team is midfield and we have changed it. Barry is a loss for me yet I have a good feeling about Fernandinho and I believe it will reap rewards quickly. He may never reach the level of reading the game as Gaz, but if he gets close then his physical attributes will mean we have a very talented holding mid.
