Gag-ing for a move: Will Manchester City save bargain Fernando from his Real Madrid hell?

With Roma not electing to take their option on the Argentine international, Roberto Mancini is ready to renew his interest in the €7m midfielder

This summer's Real Madrid exodus is already being planned, and one of the first names expected out of the door is Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago.

The talented 26 year old is due to meet boss Jose Mourinho on the 15th July to discuss his plans, along with Lassana Diarra, Ricardo Carvalho and Hamit Altintop, but their futures all seem to lie away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Gago spent last season on loan at Roma in a topsy-turvy campaign caused by Luis Enrique trying to implement a new philosophy at the Giallorossi. The lack of success has since seen the Spaniard replaced by Zdenek Zeman, and the Olimpico club have decided against exercising their €7m option to purchase the Real Madrid midfielder.

With no prospect of being reintegrated into the fold in Madrid, Gago's agent is exploring options elsewhere and remains confident that Manchester City will take a gamble on long-term target Gago at such a bargain price. Coincidentally, it is David Pizarro's loan return from Eastlands to Roma that could well make space for Gago as a deep-lying playmaker in City's 25-man Premier League squad.

Brazilian side Cruzeiro have admitted their attempts to sign the ex-Boca Juniors man, but to no avail:

"We began conversations with the player's representatives in order to see if it was possible but things didn't happen.

"After the first contact they cut off negotations and we never heard anything from them again."

Another club interested in Gago is his former club Boca Juniors - who last night lost the Copa Libertadores final - but even with the possible departure of Juan Román Riquelme, the deal seems financially impossible.

A good number of their rumours are shite. But here's hoping that there is something to this one.

Gago is a much better passer than De Jong but not as tenacious. He'd offer good cover and his good passing range could be an asset. He wouldn't displace Barry though like Martinez probably would.

Not seen him since his Real Madrid days but I never rated him when I saw him. Seem like a passenger and certainly not someone who I'd want in the trenches with me!

Why not go for the Argie in Belgium instead. He is more tenacious, a better passer and on the verge of overtaking Gago on the Argie pecking order. Biglia I think his name is.
