Fernando

He's the reincarnation of Nigel de Jong. Maybe not the most gifted player in the team but does one specific job and does it very well. I've said this all along that if you just stick him in front of the back four, and him and the centre backs keep that triangle instead of rushing all over the place, he's so solid.

I think he's less one dimensional than De Jong. Covers a lot more ground. Better judgement. Just hope he keeps this up for the rest of the season now (and beyond)

Good in both legs, didn't quite reach his top level though. Got caught out on his defensive duties a few times but fortunately nothing came of it. Why?
Zin doesn't seem to think Silva is much use anymore. I thought he was very good last night. Battled his bollocks off after getting kicked as usual and some of his interplay with KDB was lovely. The new stick to beat him with is his lack of tracking back..
Anyway, onto Fernando. He was excellent in the role he was given and deserves credit after what must have been an awful moment for him last week.
Played with the right personnel he's more than capable. Putting him in a two won't ever work so as long as we knock that on the head and play to his strengths he can become a handy player to have in the squad.

Or ask yourself if the criticism at times has been way over the top?

Despite what some on here think, we dont buy "shit" players any more.
Yes, most definitely, the same way we often go way overboard when praising players. That's just Bluemoon hyperbole.

And 'shit' and 'good enough for Pep's team' are 2 ends of the spectrum. There is a lot in between. Bony isn't completely shit, obviously, but he's not good enough for us. Same for Fernando (fortunately he has been more useful lately.

As good as he has been in a few European games, he's still so limited and you'd be naive to think we couldn't improve on him.

Faster better in the air & on the ball imo but still he is the modern day Nigel. We found that Nige was kind of surplus to requirements when we were playing well & I suspect that could end up being Fernando's fate, but recently we haven't been playing well at all, & imo if Yaya had played next to Fern1 in place of Fernando in either game, PSG would have ripped us apart just the same as Liverpool & Leicester did.

Nige was a firefighter who we decided we didn't need but then discovered we probably did.

He isn't the most gifted player so inevitably you end up with some fans banging on about his passing or lack of creativity and coming to the conclusion that he is shit. Probably the same fans who complain that Yaya isn't tracking runners or breaking up play when Fernando isn't in the team.

Managed to watch the game back last night after I got home from the match, the tv doesn't really do justice to how shockingly bad he was .. Clichy had a worldy because, fortunately, he was able to stem the tide of being doubled up on constantly. You suggested silvas defensive duties were neglected, glad we agree on that, however, his decision making with the ball has become really concerning...

People moan about yayas attitude toward other players, silva 4/5 times last night was berating those around him for his mistakes....

Off the bench, like last night ;-)

Kun plays, end of.

So too does Navas, KdB and Merlin.

They give us pace and balance with some serious technical ability and threat.

Navas last night was everywhere and his defensive stint was incredible.

Back 4 with the Ferns sat in front and that front 4 and we are cushty!

Play silva in that formation against any of the semi final opponents and it's goodnight Vienna!!!
