Just seen the updated Fifa rankings and it makes you think how they work out the rankings. For the champions of South America to be outside of the top 10 is crazy. Also Wales in the top 10 with Romania is madness.

Saying that for Ireland its bad reading for the World Cup quailifers Ireland are in the 4th pot so its going to be a hard draw again and we could draw any of England , N Ireland , Wales and Scotland.
 
I see the US has dropped 7 places to 34 after beating Holland and Germany in back to back away matches. I guess the FIFA investigation is backfiring when it comes to this!

In friendlies though. And who gives a shit about friendlies?

That's the thing, though. They played friendlies while the rest of the world was playing competitive games. The way that the FIFA rankings are weighted, competitive games are worth far more points than friendlies.

Also, the amount of points you get is weighted by the level of the competition you face. While it means the USA's friendly wins were worth about as much as they could've been (for friendlies...) on the other hand it means that when the Copa America is played, since half of the teams there are ranked really poorly, the South American sides don't actually get that many points for winning them either.

The system favours low-ranked teams who beat high-ranked teams in competitive matches. It always has done, and that's what the aim of the rankings was in the first place.
