FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Happy for the Matilda's to win that game against the spoiling tactics of the Irish. Thought Fowler looked good on the ball but didn't do enough off it and needs to work a bit harder. Thought sh did get in some decent positions in the pockets but her team-mates couldn't/wouldn't make the pass. Really well taken penalty from Catley.

Good for the tournament that one of the co-hosts started with a win. Didn't see the game but it's a bit of a shock that Norway lost.

Mary Fowler has a chance to shine now for the Aussie's with Kerr being out for the first two games.
She didn't set anything alight.

Two games and the word 'grim' fits both of them, NZ and Ireland adopt the same general strategy - opportunism. NZ got theirs and Ireland didn't.

Too many games in women's football where one team are clearly the underdogs and have to rely on athleticism, stamina and marking the opposition player who receives a pass with the only feature they can control, and that is denying them space. There are few women players who can control, move and beat a defender that you see time and time again in men's football!

Tbf that's a stat we never normally see and if used in the men's Prem, would see the possession stats change to something similar in a lot of games.

Though ones where City play may end up more like 50-25-25 or something like that. It'd be interesting to see.
I doubt that a quarter of a men's footy match would involve neither side having possession. It might be that we don't see that stat in men's football as I suspect that at PL level it wouldn't be in double figures. If it were a talking point it would be writ large so that the 'meedya cognoscenti' would have something else to yap about.

It would be similar.

The figures they show as possession usually (Inc men's PL) are actually just a proportion of passes made. So if we do 400 and Everton do 100 then we have 80% possession and Everton 20%. It's a bit a a basic way if doing it but it's what gets used.

If they're now showing an amount where no team has possession then they are doing something different. Potentially any time where the ball is moving, away from a player, is counted as out of possession. Might not be that but possibly.

I'm sure the difference will be explained at some point as the tournament goes on.
