Films that get better the more you watch them

Once upon a time in America

Cinema Paradiso

Directors cut every time otherwise you don't get it and they are pointless films.

(The end of Cinema Paradiso, when Salvatore watches the reel Alfredo left for him, still gets me every bloody time).

Gladiator.

The silence of the lambs.

It's a brilliant film. But it often gets compared unfavourably with the Godfather. Which is unfair. They deal with different themes (one dealing with Italian organised crime, the other with Jewish organised crime). Judge each film on its own merits. The one thing that has been mentioned down the years about a possible minus for "Once" is it's length. Nearly 4 hours (The Godfather is an hour less). But it's such a great film, you don't notice the time passing.

Totally agree

‘This is Spinal Tap’ gets better with every viewing. Little details emerge all the time.

‘Gregory’s Girl’ because of its nostalgia value, as well as its quality. Start looking for YouTube clips of Altered Imaged straight after.

I didn't like the extended cut of Cinema Paradiso as much as the original release- seemed more cynical and downbeat.

It is very rare to find a film that gets better each time you watch it. Shawshank Redemption initially springs to mind for me which I am sure will divide people 50-50....

However. Watched Shaun of the Dead again the other day after a few years and I don't know why, but it seems to get funnier every time I watch it.

What films do people find that get better when they watch them again?

A lot of mine have already been mentioned in the thread but actually, with you mentioning Shaun as the starter, I think that Hot Fuzz falls into that camp as well. Saw it at the cinema when it first came out and thought it was just ok, but having seen it a few times since it's always one I watch through whenever it's on ITV4!
