This is a belter and I'm interested what BM thinks.
My mate and his Mrs were given £10k a year ago by his parents as a deposit on a house, which is now their first house together. His parents said they could have a year's grace and pay them back in instalments of £200 a month after that, meaning it'd take them about 3-4 years to pay it back. They're due to start those instalments in January 2015.
As a side issue, the lad's Mrs also has her own debts of about 4k due to not being much good with money, despite having a well paid job. The lad has no debts and manages his money pretty well.
As a further side issue, the lad's parents' financial situation changed over the last year as his Dad was out of work due to ill health, received only peanuts via sick pay, and had to use up some ISAs they had to the point that he's had to go back to work despite still not being 'properly' well as they'd basically ran out of money and were struggling to meet their mortgage etc.
A twist in the tale has come about as the lad's Mrs has been handed 10k by a relative (on her side) for xmas after he came into a lot of money (I don't know how or where the money came from).
So, they owe 10k and she's just been handed 10k. She also has personal debts of 4k ish.
What do BM think is the best thing for them to do? what do you think is the 'right' thing to do?
