Morning lads,

Got a 'NOTICE OF INTENDED PROSECUTION' letter through my door for speeding.

theres a form i have to fill in and presume i take to my local station.

it doesn't mention the cost of the fine ...

also it says i can go on a speeding aware corse to avoid penalty points and the fine but i will have to cover the cost of the corse.

does anyone know how much the fine is ? and how much the corse is ?

£60 and £120 last time I heard mate, worth doing tbh as it will probably save more on you insurance renewal.

My Insurance went up £9 per month because of an SP30

take the course ..... one day course better than 3 years of points (4 years for insurance purposes).

With regards the form, you normally just send it off in the post with your driving licence.

It was a £60 fine and the course was included in that when I did mine back in September. The details of the offence are not put on a database that insurance companies are privvy to. It's up to you if you tell the insurance company - they won't find out any other way though ;-)

Just been on course - very interesting.

The 20/30 mph speed limits are there for a good reason - all to do with mortality rates particularly childrens - really does make you think about your speed when you're in a built up area.

You'd be mad to take the points - next one will take you up to 6 and that means HUGE insurance loadings!

Fixed penatly is £60 plus £90 for the course. I'd recommed taking the course as you do not have to inform your insurance and no points are added to you licence. I take it you were only fractionally over the speed limit for them to offer you the course.

I've got six points on mine. Both times i was snapped doing 37mph on a 30mph road. Really annoying as i wasn't driving dangerously and it was in the middle of the night with no pedestrians or traffic on the road.

Take the course, even if it's the £60 speeding fine + £120 for the course. Points will affect your insurance premium for four or five years.

I've been caught twice on fixed cameras, once at 35 in a 30 and second time 46 in a 40 and wasn't given the opportunity of the course, which I would have accepted to keep a clean license

I did this course last month. Fine is £60 but if you take the course it costs £60 but you don't pay the fine. So you only pay £60 and no points. You only get the offer of a course if you are just above the speed limit or have driven through a red light. You will not get the offer again though if caught within two years.

Do the course pal! I got caught doing 51 in a 40 before xmas, got offerd the course in leicester for £75 but rang up and changed the course location to staffordshire and the cost went down to £62.50!!! Just had to sit through 4 hours of two old women talking to us, the hardest part is staying awake! aslo you dont have to pay the fine, so it cost me £2.50 more than the fine would of been.

I did the course a couple of years ago, most boring 4 hours of my life, but worth not having the points. Doing 40 on Alan Turing way...bastards.

The cost of the course depends on the area apparently , but as a general rule ....

Speed Awareness Courses

Speeding motorists can now go back to driving school and take a speed awareness course as an alternative to having points on their licence. The courses are part of a government initiative to improve the driving of those motorists caught fractionally over the speed limit – particularly in urban areas.

Only drivers caught doing less than 38mph on a road with a 30mph limit can attend the courses. They will pay about £90 for the one-day course instead of the normal £60 fixed penalty, but they will avoid having any points added to their licences.

All those caught at 38mph and above will continue to be fined and given penalty points.

The course aims to make motorists into safer drivers. A study by Staffordshire University of the course run in Lancashire found that issuing a penalty notice had no impact on driving habits but attending the course resulted in a 5mph reduction in average speed

My missus has just been on a road awareness course at Carrington , Manchester , for veering into another lane on Kingsway and causing an asian chap to run into a bollard/traffic light ....... the course lasted all day (8am-4.45pm), but she loved it , and found it worthwhile .... it cost her just over £150.

the cost of the course is the same as the fine would be.....£60

you are offered the speed awareness course if your speed was within 10% + 2-3mph of the limit you broke....(i.e. 35-38mph in a 30 zone)

you can only take the course once in 3 years, so any further speeding that had potential to be offered as a course cant be offered again within the 3 year period

the course is basically a room full of people sat watching videos and then pointing out potential accident issues and some paperwork...

if you accept the course, you are then sent a form with a number of course locations you can chose from.....you then go online and pay the fee, at the same time booking your course location. You are then sent the paperwork to attend the course. You need to take with you a current highway code book, but i found the course leader had some spares.

i thought the course would be full of young joyriders, but it wasn't....it was full of middle aged women and retired men....i was one of the youngest there and i'm erarly 40's

What speed were you doing and what was the limit?

If it was something stupid like 55 in a 30 I don't think you're eligible for the course.

Don't you mean boyracers rather than joyriders? I'm not surprised at that at all. Usually the boyracers will be exceeding the limit by more than the margin allowed. I was.

lol...you got a point there ;)

i did the course just before xmas wasnt as bad as i thought it would be,you pay the £60 pound fine to cover the course it lasted 4hrs and i did it between 17.30 and 21.30 so didnt have to take anytime off work

did the course this morning , £60 , wasn't too boring infact it makes you think and even gives you tips on driving more economically - one thing i brought out of it was that some insurance companies increase your premium by up to £50 per point for the duration of the points so could cost you an addditional £450 in premiums so well worth the inconvenience of a day off work
