Hi everyone,

Some of you may have seen the thread I posted in the other forum re going to a City game for the first time, but just to fill you in, basically I'm an Australian city fan coming to Manchester for the first time in Jan/Feb. I'm 23 and going with my 18 year old brother. Bascially just looking for advice on the best way to enjoy Manchester (apart from going to a game, which having followed the team from abroad for a dozen odd years was the first thing I put on the agenda!). Things I'd like to know are ...

What are the best pubs and/or nightspots for people around our age?
What are the main things you'd recommend for a tourist to do in Manchester and the North West?
Are there any areas I should avoid to stay out of trouble?
And any other advice you may have to assist me in enjoying my first trip to Manchester.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Don't bring an inflatable kangaroo with you.

Bring lots of layers.

Mary D's deserves a visit before match.

Don't bring an inflatable kangaroo with you.

What music are you both into?

Nothing really, allthough Manchester is a great place to live and visit it's not really a tourist place. In the surrouding areas, if you like theme parks Alton Towers and Blackpool are good days out allthough be warned Blackpool is a shit hole but the pleasure beach (theme park) is great. The National Football Museum is in Preston which is quality, it's moving to Manchester in 2011 but if you love football that is a must IMO. I'd recoomend taking a trip to Chester as the town centre is great with all the medievil buildings. The Trafford Centre is good for shopping and it's got some entertainment stuff round it like a decent driving range and a ski slope.

Just avoid any place your not familiar with at night, try sticking the the city centre at night unless you do any of the above.

You should get a job at the tourist board you miserable sod!

Aussie-PM the following info and Ill tell you what you need to do, I assume this poster has not been to Manchester since 1984!

What Bars/Music do you like- Busy/Loud/full of birds/cool-chic/

Clubs- What kind of music, RnB/Dance/Indie?

Do you want to visit-museams/galleries or explore the great outdoors/

How long are you here and where are you staying.

As much as people may say it's better I come in August ... I'm really excited to be experiencing a cold winter for the first time in my life ... as stupid as that may sound to those of you who live through them every year!

As far as what kind of music/nightspots I'm into, I honestly don't mind the music, I'd just be interested to hear your general recommendations. I would be interested in meeting ladies as attractive as those in Coronation Street, but honestly I'd just like to hear the nightspots you guys recommend, attractive women or not.

Haha inflatable kangaroos have never really been my thing. Funny you mention it. Some old friends who I'll be catching up with in the UK have told me a number of times "as long as I'm in an Australian pub on Australia Day I don't mind being away from home." Personally I'd rather experience the English culture ... and I'll be spending Australia Day at the most un-Australian place possible ... a Premier League football match ... and I couldn't be happier!
