Fitness Levels

Not for the first time this season we have watched City fail to match the opposition for workrate or intensity. The players looked physically shattered out there and even the Liverpool players like Henderson, Milner looked in much better shape even though they had played in the Cup Final.

Stats of late have revealed Bacary Sagna on average covers the most ground,on average, of any City player and yet his average only places him at 67th overall in the Premiership. Furthermore it was stated Spurs, in the 2-1 defeat, covered nearly 6 more miles collectively than the City team.

Personally I find it difficult to believe it relates to the laziness of the players, as this seems to afflict the majority of the players, and can only presume it is down to the training and conditioning work undertaken. For me this is the biggest failure of this season and which seems to undermine our progress.

Thank you.

I've said this on here since the start of the season that we don't look fit at all and some look overweight. We don't or can't match anyone for workrate.

Our lack of fitness may have also contributed to some muscle injuries.

I'd say that they're getting a very easy ride in training. Great for the smiles and the Inside City videos and pictures but not great for an actual match.

we fielded an aging team tonight , several of the side were around 30 year old , were the dippers played a younger team who recovered far quicker from sundays extra time , they were not technically better , but Klopp is a clever manager and knew how this game would unfold . Pellers should have rotated more players , he does sometimes appear to be tactically naive , hence the reason the Pep has been appointed for next season.

Wouldn't the huge amount of injuries this season have to be taken into account? Take De Bruyne for example we are desperate for him back so do you take the decision to increase training as well as play ninety minutes or ease off on training. As well as injury prone players like Kompany, Aguero we always seem to have players just coming back that we need to play so maybe the decision has been made to focus on game time rather than up the training time.

What people don't realise is that Pep doesn't hammer his players with loads of running.

I've read his biography on the first year at Bayern, and the players were astounded with the lack of fitness and running sessions. It was all about ball work and building intensity and a basic level of fitness with the ball, doing 'rondo' drills.

So much so that senior players used to ask permission to go for a jog at the end of the session. Pep believes that long distance running is a placebo effect on the players' minds and does more harm than good.
