I'd seen rumours that he favoured their style of play over ours. A tad worrying.

It would be even more worrying if we haven't been able to convince him to join. And a bit frustrating that Pep was supposedly out of the country on the one afternoon Wirtz came over to visit.

Strong disagree, would rather than a world class Wirtz and one other than a collection of 4 or 5 average to good players.

This is a fair take. We are not 1 player away anymore.

We wanted him. Multiple reposts said Pep warming him up and calling him up.
He is world class and very young.
And Liverpool snaked him from Bayern as well as us.

He is not Harry Maguire Fred or Alexis Sanchez story. He is a generational player who happened to like another club project better.

But the task just got really really tough.

If he goes to Liverpool, well done to them. They get a creator to step in as Salah ages out. Presumably he’ll replace Diaz. Big coup for them and makes our task next season more difficult.

Just highlights how poor our recent recruitment has been under Txiki. We knew last Summer we had an ageing squad/midfield and Txiki brought in Gundogan on a free which was just by chance because he was available. Even then it was rumoured we wouldn't have brought him in had he not been a freebie!

Had we been on it for the past few windows - as we had been between 2017-2022 - then we'd have a ready-made squad to allow us to splurge money on one of two good players. Like when we got Mahrez in 2018.

But we've been poor in the market for too long, had too much loyalty to ageing players and not replaced them properly meaning we're now in a position where we need to get a few helpers rather than one jewel. Unlike the dippers.

That’s the title winning signing done for them. They’ve just got considerably stronger, while we’ve got weaker with Kev going. Reijnders will help. But Wirtz is an excellent signing for them.
