Football tribalism is so bad over transfers. Normal football fans will look at Wirtz and say that's a player. Real, Bayern, and us obviously agreed and had a sniff. Leverkusen handled this well and get top dollar. The scousers look like they might changing their set up. Kerkez and Frimpong are nowhere near the creative element of the Robertson and Trent Alexander Arnold but might be better defensively. They might find teams park the bus now they've won a title and to unlock those defensives you really need a good midfield.

Hence why we've obviously gone for a few signings that have quick feet in right spaces. They've bought a ready made meal. Ours might need heating up but Pep is a master cook when he gets going.

The club have extensively planned their squad re-build. We've had a group of names, with first and second choices and we've moved quickly. The money involved in securing Wirtz is staggering. To sign three players for less than he's rumoured to cost is the correct decision considering the issues in the squad. Wirtz is better and more consistent than Cherki but the money we've paid for him makes it a no-brainer to choose him instead.

I don't think City usually care about saving face. But in this instance I do believe that whilst Wirtz may have decided against joining us it was quite likely because we weren't going to pay him what he wanted. There was a Wirtz shaped hole in our team with De Bruyne's departure, I don't feel like he would choose the dippers over us for footballing reasons. I don't really care at this point, because we're in a much better place having got the players we did and so quickly.

Wirtz dragging on and on wouldn't have done us any good either and the club probably saw that coming so also felt it best to target others.

Maybe we got what were our 1st choices all along?

Players do due diligence to see offers out there. Alf-Inge did a European tour before they chose us. Do you not think we knew the financial aspects of the deal before they visited? It can be true that Wirtz would have been very happy to play for us or Liverpool or Bayern or Madrid, but his preference was Liverpool & the amount they were willing to pay him. We could then have refused to match/go higher or, as usual, refused to be part of an auction - we want players to declare they only want us.

Let's face it rivalry and hatred to one side, they're signing a cracking player and will make a huge difference to their side, I'd have loved him here. Overpriced probably but a game changer none the less. Well happy with Cherki though for a quarter of the price, what a window we've had

Ah but he didn’t fly over to Manchester for us. He did it to look at houses in Cheshire, so he could live near the other liverpool players. Or so I was told.

Is he not still likely to be higher? All I can see is that they turned down £100m (which would put him 10th), so you'd assume a final fee would be a bit higher.

Then again, I do remember all the fuss about Nunez's fee having a lot of add-ons, and I think that came out later that they were almost all easy ones like playing 20 games. Helps the cult justify their claims of poverty :)

Parts of the Wirral are very nice places to live and several Liverpool and Everton players live there.
