Florian Wirtz

Players are overhyped all the time and ‘world class’ is just used far too often, in my opinion.
At 21, he certainly has the potential to be world class, just as he has the potential to not be. He is, currently, a very, very good footballer, but let’s see where he is in 3/4 years time, before we give him that label.
By the way, him playing in the Bundesliga or him signing for Liverpool has absolutely no bearing on my opinion.
„ At 21“. That’s the thing. Your statement revolves around his age. Even while being 21 you can’t name 1 person at his position alone who is clear of him currently since that certain player doesn’t even exist. He is starting for one of the best national teams and is now moving for a certain amount of price and has done something no one has done for his club beforehand. Not only not losing a game in the Bundesliga but actually being the best player in a league with players like Musiala and Kane. I am sure you would consider both of them world class - if we go by age ( that’s your argument) then I doubt you wouldn’t call Musiala world class, would you?
i am sure Neymar and hazard were considered world class at that age too already.

For me personally he is world class. There is no better player at his current position + he is the absolute vocal point in his team. We got 3 other good players instead of him but I doubt no one here wouldn’t consider him world class if he joined.

Gotta give credit where credit is due. Not even 2 weeks ago he was credited to be the one who would give us the edge to win the league next season again now he isn’t even world class.
He clearly is otherwise no one would easily pay over 100M for him. And it’s not 1 club only - there were 3 who were able/ wanted to.

£150m is a lot. Add in agent fees, parent backhanders and wages. At least £200-250m transfer in total.

Seems excessive and distorts the market but since the tone has been set. I expect very good fees for any player leaving city this summer.

We tried to keep the market realistic but the rags and dips have blown it up again.

Let’s hope the price is too much and he turns to shit.

Since we have already done quite wonderful in our transfer I am totally at peace.

Still I am still intrigued what happened those two three days. Was he here and visited us or is it true that he came to check properties near Liverpool.

Did Pep ever talked to him and even the fact why did he rejected Bayern when they have been grooming him and his dad for so many years.

Was it slot or was it fellow German Kloop who pushed him towards Liverpool.
So many intriguing questions!

Leverkusen would have stuck him in the stiffs for a year before they sold him to Bayern, they aren't Dortmund. They despise eachother right up to boardroom level.

Be interesting to see who has the better season individually and collectively between him and Cherki for sure. A lot to do to justify that price tag, Jack's sat on 7 major honours in 4 seasons through his contributions and he's overpriced according to many.

So Wirtz was open to joining City but wanted assurances that Pep was going to be here beyond his current contract and City wouldn’t make guarantees so Wirtz joined the dippers.

That sounds like bollocks, but if true, it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'm not sure the manager I want to work with will be there long term, so I'm going to do the obvious thing, and sign for someone else to guarantee that I won't play under him. It's like turning down a date with Scarlett Johansson because she's not looking for anything too serious right now.

What is the marker for being world class? Wirtz is 22. At the same stage of their career, Phil Foden had more goals than Wirtz in far less minutes on the pitch. Phil then went on to score 27 goals and swept the board for player of the year awards in a far tougher league, in the corresponding season. Let's see if Wirtz scores 27 goals next season and sweeps the board for awards.
Phil has played at a higher level than Wirtz has, for his entire career. He's more decorated and was winning golden boy awards and player of the championship at youth football tournaments. Something Wirtz never achieved. The Phil of 2024 operated at a level which Wirtz has never reached.
Wirtz may well go on to become the best thing since sliced bread. But there is a lot of hyperbole surrounding him.
As of yet, he's not been a game changer in the Champions League or the Premier League.
Let's see how he gets on before declaring him as the second coming of christ.
If we you to look at his achievements so far, they pale into insignificance compared to Phils.

It’s from a dipper journo mate.
Paul Joyce.

If Wirtz is already deemed world class then Foden has to be in the same conversation and he can back it up with silverware, especially the season before last he dragged us over the line.

And let's be honest, football is a short term game.

No club can guarantee that any manager will be there for a determined amount of time. You're only ever a bad run of results away from the sack. A manager might get a better offer and quit. They might get "tired" and leave like Klopp did. In football, nothing is certain.
