well,
that may be what is said,
but it isn't true according to a very good friend of mine who is a lifelong vale fan.
he is 60 and comes from there.

he maintains that port vale are so named because of the shortening of "longport"
an area close to the ground on the local canal,
and the "vale" part is because one of the definitions of vale is:
a little trough or canal.

he also says the club had already been formed before they decided to meet in "the port vale house".

George Smith had two arms - however one arm / hand / fingers were disfigured due to a gunshot wound in WW2.
Didn’t stop him scoring 4 past the rags in a war time game but did cost him playing for England as the old boys selection committee couldn’t see past the injury.

The longest football match in England took place between Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers in March, 1946.

It lasted 3 hours 23 minutes in a thrilling Division 3 North cup replay until it was eventually decided by the toss of a coin, which Donaster won, as the light faded in the days before floodlights.

My father was at the game, he went home for something to eat, returned to the ground, and said the players were so tired, if they fell over, they had to be helped back up.

That’s a brilliant story.
 
Spurs, Villa and Wednesday were all founded as cricket clubs and played some football in the winter. AC Milan were also founded as a cricket club by a group of English ex pats, hence their English name, Athletic Club of Milan.
