Free online course starting next month. May be of interest to some of you.
We are really looking forward to working with you as we explore the wonderful game of football, or soccer in some parts of the world. The sport is more commonly referred to as the people’s game and is a multi-billion pound spectacle.

Former Liverpool captain Alan Hansen and other football experts will be joining me, Professor Grant Jarvie, on the University of Edinburgh’s free online course. We will examine the significance of football and why it is more than a game.
We will be looking at great football clubs and rivalries, football finances and the top 20 richest clubs in the world, the World Cup, football matches that have had an impact on society, where the game came from and where it is going.
You will be taken inside football grounds, football museums, and learn from inspiring examples of how football is helping in different part of the world - helping with poverty, improving health, circulating money and players around the world.
What are the five most successful football leagues in the world and why? Why is women’s football one of the fastest growing games in the world? Was the most recent World Cup in Brazil a success?
You will be introduced to evidence and key trends affecting football today.You will interact with the course community and be involved in quizzes, in course discussions, as well as a very short writing and review exercise which asks you to reflect on whether football is more than a game.
You are encouraged to think now about examples of football in your own community and country. You do not need to be an expert to join the course as no background is required.
