Bojinov springs to mind but I can't recall why the loss was pivotal.

Correct. I knew this would likely be easy when I added the compatriot bit, but without it the answer could be quite a few former players. ;-)

And it was a 2-1 loss away to Spurs which ended our hopes of a birth in Europa League the next season (which our new owners really wanted for exposure, revenue, and player/staff recruitment).

I love this bit from the Guardian’s match report, though—would love to see a compilation and retrospection of similar statements made after or less triumphant moments in the early days of our modern era:

Tottenham building upon foundations Manchester City eye with envy

At least Spurs have laid the foundations. Manchester City remain a building site awaiting the arrival of digging equipment. If the true qualities of a team are judged on their performances away from home, City are a collection of disparate parts lacking cohesion, confidence and a sense of purpose. After Saturday's match Mark Hughes partly blamed speculation about his future as manager for the team's inconsistent performances. "It has made my job more difficult than it is already," he declared. "It's come to a point where everyone has to understand that Mark Hughes will be manager here next year. That has been made very clear to me.”
He scored more than once didn't he? Was he with us 3 years?
Technically with us 2007-2010, though the last year was a loan to Parma.

And all statistics sites, including Bluemoon, has him scoring one solitary goal in 11 appearances for us (and that is the only one I remember him scoring, as well).

Perfectly decent footballer cursed with injuries, unfortunately.

Yep, it was the compatriot bit that gave it away.

Sparkless referring to himself in the third person there, you can take the boy out of pompous rag world but you can't take etc.
