It's possible to objectively measure how good a team is using the Elo rating system.

This site follows the history of all Europe's top clubs and is probably the most accurate site of the 5 or so that attempt to order club sides.

It shows you the highest ranking each team has ever achieved (by clicking on each club's name) and also the highest rating. The two are not necessarily the same since it is possible to have a higher historical rating but to be ranked lower.

To my mind the goal is reach the highest ranking and then take the highest rating the club has ever had while at that ranking.

After last night's victory over Napoli City exceeded that previous high (set in February 2012) by attaining 3rd position with 1947 elo points.

This might only last till tonight as Juventus could take 3rd back (or not) but if you were wondering if City deserve all the praise we are currently getting then we do! The trick now is to turn that superiority into silverware.

There is still a gap between City and the big two Spanish sides and it's another argument for another day to decide if we can one day catch them in the future.

For now, enjoy our best team EVER :-)

Interesting that we're still behind where we were January 2014. Not by much mind.

Ooh three more domestic defeats for our 1,000. Are you watching, Jamie Jackson?

Great site. I've just wasted an hour faffing about with different team stats.

I like ELO ranking as a way to rank teams or competitors. It means each individual game gives different points depending on the respective ELO rank of the teams, and so drawing with a team way below your own rank is detrimental to your rank, and beating a minnow has hardly any effect on your ELO score. It's used to rank chess players... >2400 makes you a Grand Master, so it's interesting to see that no football team has ever been so dominant to reach such a high rank (although it does depend a little on how you run the calculation)

Interesting that lower down with the "Strong against" and "Weak against" teams, we're strongest against the rags and weakest against Arsenal.

Yes though,as you have probably worked out, it all about expectancy vs actual results. So most of the time we do better against United than we are expected to do even though they have a good record against us overall. Not unsurprising in that for a long while a win v them was the only thing we could go for and was our cup final so we tried harder.

Arsenal have usually beaten us even when we were better than them.

It's a true measure of bogey teams if you like.

If you tap on matchups you will get a shed load more data too.
