There are plenty
However for me, it was Cardiff in the cup 94 what a horrible day from start to finish
Never been as nervous getting in or coming out to face a non existant escort to the coaches with every type of welsh headcase around
We lost 1-0 ,missed a pen and had a goal ruled out Whilst all around carnage ensued
Right, who remembers this game and what are your forgettable games??

Probably the most mental game I've attended that. A mate of mine decided to drive down with another 4 of us, setting off about 7am. Trouble is, 2 of those 4 didn't make the early start - we were outside the flat the 2 of them were renting in Heaton Moor and banging on the door but to no avail. Turns out they'd been on the lash the night before until daft o'clock and were dead to the world. More of them later.

So the 5 became 3 and we set off. We stopped in Worcester for some breakfast, and arrived in Cardiff about 11. I'm not sure why we thought this was a good idea - we all knew they had a reputation for trouble and this was their biggest game in years. There'd been some serious trouble in their 3rd round match at Ninian Park against 'Boro a few weeks earlier, and something akin to world war 3 broke out when they'd played Swansea just before Christmas - not totally unexpected given the opposition but the trouble was even worse than at the average Cardiff v Swansea match. Somewhat bizarrely sandwiched in between those games, they'd had an away game called off for bad weather at short notice during the Christmas holiday period against Huddersfield I think and hundreds of their fans turned up at Maine Road to take in our game against Saints, behaving impeccably and cheering like fuck when we scored.

Anyway, we arrived in Cardiff and parked up on a street near the ground then went off in search of a watering hole. It was deserted on the streets at that time of the morning. We walked past the dodgy looking Ninian pub and a load of faces popped up at the window to check out who we were. We didn't have colours on but we just knew that they knew who we were. Luckily no-one came out and followed us. Some old dear prior to that had told us that the Corporation pub further down the road was a good boozer. Only trouble is, as we were approaching it about 30 of their mob went in so that one was out of bounds. I dread to think what would've happened if we'd gone in before them and at that point I think we were all thinking why the fuck any of us thought drinking in Cardiff was anything but a bad idea.

On we went and we came across a pub called the Butcher's Arms. We knew we couldn't walk the streets forever and decided to take a punt on it. Turns out it was a rather lucky punt and the Cardiff fans in there were actually ok with us. At about 2.15 we left to make our way to the ground. As we were approaching the crossroads where the Corporation pub was, there must've been a mob of about 300 gathered outside there and another pub called the Cantom over the road. We shat ourselves and dived in a sports shop. As we dived in a lone City fan who was inside and no doubt had the same idea made his excuses and left - probably thought we were Cardiff fans and his arse went. We knew we couldn't stay there forever and it was only a matter of time before some of their mob outside spotted us so we hatched a plan to literally walk through them and head for the back streets while all the time smiling and giving the impression we were local. Unbelievably it worked and we managed to blend in with the normal Cardiff fans making their way to the game.

The hard part was done but I nearly got done outside our own turnstiles when a seemingly friendly Cardiff fan tried to spring a trap.

The game came and went - we met the 2 no-shows from earlier who only arrived at half time after getting up late and hiring a car. Afterwards it booted off all over on the way back to the car and we luckily managed to get out of there in one piece. Not before my mate told his brother (the driver) to run any **** over who tried attacking the car. He was being serious as it was that desperate a situation!

Thats more or less what we encountered except we were dodging golf balls with nails in them flying over Whilst the local police just stood and watched
If we had won that match i would have seriously been frightened for my life coming out of that shithole
 
Cardiff should be a memorable game....... as the headline in the papers the next day screamed..... 'S-Wales OUT!'

It was the last game PJ Swales presided over City as Chairman!

For me the unforgettable game would be the last game of the season 1992 / 93 losing to Everton 5-2 with Martyn Margetson subbed at half time after conceding three.
The 0-0 at Wycombe away in the second round of the League Cup under Alan Ball is a close second......
 
Didn't we miss a penalty or have a goal disallowed late in that game. Think it was a pen from Curle.
We parked fairly close so only a short walk going in (and we were chuffed as we'd just heard Swales had agreed to sell to Lee) but it was scary getting back to the car and out of town. The local plod were even worse than our forwards that afternoon.

Both. Curle on each occasion, in the second half at the end where our fans were. He had a penalty saved, and then scored, only to have the goal ruled out for offside (wrongly).

I remember that game as an utterly soul-destroying occasion. Cardiff were in the bottom tier, so losing to them was a shocker. My mate and I weren't with the main body of our fans on the terrace, but were in the seats in the main stand down the side - so I was in line for the disallowed goal. It was very hairy there - there was no barrier between our fans and theirs, just one steward at the end of each row, and their lot on the other sides were keen to issue all kinds of snarling threats. I also remember being stranded for ages on Crewe station waiting for a connecting train that never arrived. All in all, not one of the best away days. Only plus was we thought we'd miss last orders by the time we got to Manchester but we just about made it.

I've also got vague recollections of a Rocastle overhead kick that their 'keeper saved. Plus Coton went off injured. Nathan Blake's winner was a cracking goal to be fair.

From my position on the terrace it did indeed look ropey in the seats - we kept looking over as there looked to be all sorts going on. In the opposite stand to yours, there were dozens of Cardiff fans literally staring out the City fans through the fence separating their stand and the away terrace.

Something else that's just come to mind was the pitch invasion by their fans at the final whistle. While many of them were just celebrating, a sizeable chunk headed over to the away end and proceeded to goad us. While all this was going on, there was a Mike Doyle moment as Terry Phelan emerged from amongst their mob to applaud the travelling City fans. I always liked Phelan but he shot up even further in my estimation that day.
 
I don't remember the Rocastle overhead kick (I can believe it - that great bit of skill against Ipswich must have been a week after this) and I couldn't have told you that TC went off injured. We made a quick getaway at the end. I remember just saying to my mate that we should get our heads down, say absolutely nothing and just get to the station as quickly as we could. I don't think either of us uttered a word until the train was pulling out of Cardiff Central.

Most forgettable game for me in the 90s ,was losing 2-1 to Bradford City in 1998 .
How City lost this match i will never know .
Another 2 forgettable matches of 1998 .Were Bristol Rovers and Halifax Town at Maine Road
 
The fa cup has always been my favourite competition, losing at Notts county to a technical offside goal in the last minute gutted me think it was Gary Lund with warnock in charge, luckily I never made Cardiff was in Isle of Man that day, but i do remember a documentary about Cardiff soul crew and their so called leadership they were investigated even the owner the ex Wimbledon guy was very close to some of these really dodgy guys, they played Leeds United in a cup game it ended up like world war 3, Leeds fans were terrified, the filming of it was very interesting with the policing none existent, they were on the pitch after the final whistle which Cardiff had won 2/1 trying to get amongst the Leeds fans as they exited they were attacked from all sides, a very dodgy situation !
 
Birmingham away in '97...this game was comical in a way only typical City can make it. We went 1-0 up in injury time at the end of the game and went absolutely nuts in the stands, only for them to score 2 quick goals and win 2-1.

It was a cracking away day though despite the scoreline, the beer certainly helped! XD
 
Cardiff in the cup 94 was a nightmare..
been drinking in Newport very early in the day and i seem to recall me and a mate had got a lift into Cardiff on Bernard Buckley,s coach.Newport was fine...managed to avoid any trouble initially in Cardiff, went looking for a boozer and found the rugby club ground with its bar open half a mile from ninian park. Dont remember too much about the bar cos i threw up in the bogs after over doing the strong bow..i walked out the bogs, lifted my head and noticed City were live on tv in the bar...about to kick off!

There was a park in between the rugby club and football ground..we had clearly just missed the worst of the trouble( so we thought) and i clearly remember City fans laid out on the grass...i sobered up in an instance , the atmosphere was evil. As we got to the end of the park we could see the away terrace entrance in front of us( the away coach park was to the right) the only problem was there was a full pitched battle going on right in front of the away end..it was bedlam and prob the worst ive seen ever.Some how we managed to sneak thru and dive in the turnstile without any bother..to this day i,m not sure how...stood on the terrace behind the goal everyone had a story about the trouble outside-rumours of blues getting stabbed at the train station etc etc

The blues in the seats to our left seemed to be having an eventful time also.

Will always remember Nathan Blakes smug expression after his goal( think Darren Beckford at vale park a few years earlier also in the cup), and the sickening roar of the home fans when the goal went in.Its hard to believe the fa cup meant so much more to all fans in those days..i was warned to watch my back from loads of mates supporting other teams as soon as the cup draw was made but no way was i missing City away in the 4th round-thats how it was in those days...to be fair id probably do it all again.
 
Pretty much any home game in 1997/1998, though getting beat by Bury at home was a special low!

Remember virtually nothing about the game except
1) a growing sense of numbness to the dreck being served up every week
2) that fan who lobbed his season ticket at the dugout

Game was so shit the inflatables had a fight. I was pissing myself laughing as a 12 year old watching from the rainbow stand. Frankenstein v Egg IIRC?
 
These four classics from our 98/99 Div 2 nightmare were pretty forgettable.

City 0 Wrexham 0
City 0 Gillingam 0
City 0 Bristol Rovers 0
City 0 Northampton 0.

Some of the shit we have had to watch is unbelievable given what we see now.
