The philosophy was to adopt a build up process from the back. Not leaving the outcome of the first ball (goal kick) to chance. That's what managers hope for anyway, keeping the ball (and the initiative), assuming the responsibility of building the attack, directing the play according to their team's wishes...The opposition are professional too though. A misplaced pass, in whatever philosophy a team follows, can lead to a goal.
The theory was sound, the execution wasn’t.
As I wrote, "Just "stealing" an idea you like will not work, unless you've carefully and cosistently prepared the foundations for its implementation.". If your players are not yet familiar with the way you want them to play or, even worse, if they're simply not suitable for the way you want them to play (which means, you haven't assessed their strengths - weaknesses correctly), you'll end up throwing away matches at a WC, just for fun (4-1 as we speak)...
Definitely "...the execution wasn’t", as you say, no doubt about that. Just not sure that "The theory was sound" for Australia (and so many other teams out there)...

No, I doubt it would have made any difference.That headed ball by Australia that hit the post in the first half could’ve made this a different game but France look sharp going forward.
