Francis Lee

Franny was my childhood hero for sure. Apparently he was so angry after the Hunter sending off he wrote to him and offered him a fist fight in any street in England, I read in a book somewhere.

He was my City hero as a kid as well. I also seem to vaguely recall a second fight with Hunter that happened when Franny was still at City, and he cleaned the Leeds player's clock good and proper. Can't find any footage of it though, so maybe my mind is playing tricks......

Lee scored 17 or 18 pens in one season. The myth started by that other lot is franny got them by diving. From what i remember and have read lee only won one of those penalties.

According to Wikipedia, Frannie scored 15 penalties in 71-72, though I thought it was 13! I seem to remember hearing somewhere that he won only four of those.

Frannie is my all-time favourite player and I well remember the incident with Hunter, as well as the goal he scored for Derby on his return to Maine Road. The King claimed on the 'Bell, Lee, Summerbee' video that all the City supporters rose and cheered the goal because they could still see the light blue shirt under the white Derby County one!

It was the year we blew the league if memory serves. Getting beat by stoke 1-2 at home. Banks played a blinder. Also the day the record boys in blue was put on sale. Quite a few of the discs ended up on the pitch at the end. Only year the north stand was standing as well. And the year we signed marsh.

Unfortunately I never saw Franny play for City. From the action ive seen he was a truly wonderful player. I remember seeing the derby at O.T. when he scored two, I think, and he didn't half give it the united players. They must have hated playing against him!

I know an ex copper (a rag) who was in the stationed at bootle st in the town centre and he told me this story, City had been playing at home to Stoke on a Sat afternoon and Franny and Rodney went out on the town straight after the game, later in the evening they encountered some stoke fans in a pub/club and were getting some abuse from them etc, Rodney had brought out with him a handbag ! and this was the main reason for the piss taking. Anyway a fight breaks out and they all end up at bootle st nick, In those days proceedures were very lapsed and Franny managed to convince the copper to let him identify the main culprit/gobshite from the stoke mob, so they got them in a room and trusted Franny to go in with the copper and point him out etc, this didnt exactly go to however because when Franny got close enough to the guy he simply put him away with a straight right !! Francis Lee was a hero to me as a kid, what a player he was what would he be worth in todays market ??
