Francis Lee

Half time in the cup final '69.......Franny: "just give me the ball in the second half and we'll win" I loved his confidence, self belief and winning mentality.

In a conversation I had with Ian Rush, he told me he was about to sign for City, everything was agreed, but Franny said the club couldn't afford the signing on fee, and offered him a race horse instead!

According to Wikipedia, Frannie scored 15 penalties in 71-72, though I thought it was 13! I seem to remember hearing somewhere that he won only four of those.

Frannie is my all-time favourite player and I well remember the incident with Hunter, as well as the goal he scored for Derby on his return to Maine Road. The King claimed on the 'Bell, Lee, Summerbee' video that all the City supporters rose and cheered the goal because they could still see the light blue shirt under the white Derby County one!
i thought it was 13. maybe that was the league total only?

Just checked in Gary James' Complete Record, and it was 13 in the league, plus one in each of the two domestic cups.

If I remember correctly the 4 that he won were game winners or savers whereas a few of the others were 3rd or 4th goals of the match. Hence the ones he won got more press attention. He definitely played to win pens. He would get the ball on the edge of the box and, with his fantastic acceleration, just run straight at a defender. And he was quite good at the trailing leg. But often defenders would back off of him rather than risk conceding a penalty and he'd end up scoring.

he loved the club but the lad although wadded never had enough money to sort city out, we were that bad. in fact had we not copped for the type of owner we have now we'd still be lagging behind. the prem now is all about billionaires, millionaires just don't cut it at the top table.

Agree mate. He did actually raise a fair bit of cash, too. But his dictator approach can never work running a football club. Remember David Makin's infamous phone call to GMR, which ultimately brought Lee down? I've got the text of it on my hard drive somewhere. Imagine that happening today: a club director ringing a phone in to bring down the chairman. It would be massive news.

Lee's chairmanship was an important step in the modernisation of the club ultimately into the club we are today. The place was literally falling apart after the years of Swales neglect. He set up the club as a moden business - remember Bernstein was his man. We shouldn't underestimate the mess left by Swales!

Swales atleast dealt with the fans,Lee was a complete cock.

i raged for years over the Hunter fight and he wasnt even playing for city.Great player shit personality and even worse chairman.

Swales,i believe tried to further the club, alongside himself of course.and yes the club was a mess, maybe more than i know for certain.

Lee,it was all about him,he didnt care about anything else.when he sold the club,he kept shares in the Youth set up because he thought there was money to be made.He did more damage in 3 yrs than everybody else put together.my opinion of course.wheres that whisky bottle gone.

One thing Franny did was buy out that city shop that Swales sold the rights to all merchandise for the grand sum of 100k a year
