Frank Carrodus and Tony Towers

Tony was shat on from a great height by Big Malc when Marsh arrived.
Towers had been immense all through that season and guess who got dropped from the team to make way for Marsh with only a few games remaining and we were top of the old 1st Division.. yep Tony T.
We lost the league narrowly to Derby but had Malcolm not been so stubborn, we could have won the league.
Spot on!

Malcolm Allison was responsible for some of the greatest City performances I'd ever seen since first going to Maine Road in 1959.

But his ego also contributed to some of the biggest mistakes he made throughout his career and, in my view, none was greater than disrupting the 1971-72 team by introducing an unfit, overweight 'glamour signing' in Rodney Marsh into that team at the expense of Tony Towers. 'TT' was immense for us that season, working like a Trojan, so that it seemed at times as if we had an extra midfield player on the pitch because of his prodigious efforts. Allison's insistence on playing Marsh disrupted the team's rhythm and cost us the League title.

And of course not forgetting a couple of years earlier, 'TT' scored the late winning goal at the Platt Lane end to defeat Academica de Coimbra in the ECWC quarter-final, on the way to becoming the first English team to win a domestic and European cup in the same season.

Great player, great memories!

Quote ( olde boy in my newsagents)

Towers went to st Clare's he played for Manchester catholic boys also in the same team was ian mcmurdo and Martin O'Shea who went to st Francis they played there home games on tootals on ten acre lane

I liked Tony Towers and was sorry we let him go. I say I liked him. I have to say that wasn't universal. He got the same stick as Ian Bowyer. We had an elderly element of Maine Road blue (we still have) for whom certain players can do no right. Ian Mellor was another victim. I was really pleased Bowyer won the European Cup and Towers won England caps. But there were city attendees that really only seemed to enjoy assassinating our players particularly home grown.

Thanks for your memories. Fills in gaps in my knowledge - i just recall the gobby red kid next door just making fun of him as we played footy.

Those so-called Blues really pathetic.

First I experienced was Paul Power in a home defeat to Charlton. It was shameful and it was thousands on the Kippax doing it. Some even bragged about doing it.

Edghill got the same, especially in that home defeat to (look away now MeS).... Coventry . Bellars scored for them if I remember correctly.

I know it sounds unbelievable, but I was at a game Mike Summerbee got a load of abuse. The game was against a Turkish team Fenerbache, we absolutely battered them but couldn’t score, Malcolm Allison was all over the papers saying we will “frighten Europe” anyway Summerbee had been playing what was centre forward, he missed loads & the keeper did well for them. However there was a chance late second half & Mike had an open goal but contrived to miss it. I was in the Kippax & some started giving Mike dogs abuse which wasn’t met well by some of us, it kicked off for a short while, but the fact was some fans gave our hero shit. Anyway it finished 0-0 & we lost away 2-1. I got a load of shit at work because of Malcolm saying we would frighten Europe & we were out at first attempt. Embarrassing at the time.

Went to the 74 League Cup Final against Wolves as a young lad….(although it was my third visit in 5 years) we were regular visitors then.

The announcer at Wembley announced City’s substitute as Frank Carrocious !

One to file away with Luton's "Number 14...GEOFF THEYHART" for our League Cup tie there in 88-89. I suppose Gerry Taggart had the same initials but that's it.

With TT and horswill at similar valuation even though TT miles better making tuearts value appear lower? Or is my memory failing me
If my memory serves me correctly, I’m sure Towers and Horswill were involved in an altercation that resulted in Towers being sent off in the first game of the cup tie.
