Free pussy riot

Thank you.

The reason the banner was removed so quickly is so innocent, I know someone who was on the 1st tier who sits/stands at the back complained to a steward that the banner was blocking his view of the North stand goal. I'm not saying it wouldn't of been moved at some point but this is reason it went so quickly.

I don't speak Russian. Can you tell me how they "use blasphemy?"

"On February 21, 2012, five members of the group staged a performance on the soleas of Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Their actions were stopped by church security officials. By evening, they had turned it into a music video entitled "Punk Prayer - Mother of God, Chase Putin Away!".

Not the best way to make a point in country where Orthodox Church is closely bonded with highest state authorities. Not in society where this church is strongly present and have millions of active members. As I mentioned before it didn`t earn them much sympathy in media and Russian society, even among the Putins opponents (lots of them still conservative religious people after all). In fact actions like this caused more damage than profit to the human rights case in Russia as authorities were able to easily ridicule human rights fighters as anti-social and not fully serious rebels.
If you compare this to what Anna Politkovskaya had done for instance...

The same church that believes that Jesus flipped out when he saw the temple being used for money lending ,

the same church that tells people to turn the other cheek

the same church that was destroyed and rebuilt if they would toe the line

Hypocrisy .

we have a saying "what is good for the goose , is good for the gander"

Why? On Are You Being Served? Mrs. Slocum used to speak about her "pussy" all the time.
And what happened to her? The Russians obviously put something in her tea. She was only 87 when she died.

...and what about pussy galore in the bond film - simply disappeared, she did...

Thanks for reminding us that 3-4 million people were murdered on Polish soil because they happened to be different in some way and why the Nazis thought Poland was a safe place to do this, without any problems from the locals.

Shocking ignorance but what really to expect?
Shortly for educational purposes: Poland was the only country occupied by Germans where there was instant death penalty for helping the Jews. Instant means families and individuals were being shot at the scene together with those hidden Jews of course.
Despite that we are still a nation with largest numbers of people honoured by Righteous Among the Nations medal (honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis.)

How British people would react in such horrific circumstances? Maybe like those on Guernsey?
Quite possibly looking at the contemporary young generation who is afraid to stand up on football game because of stewards or is happy to fight with flying glasses only and very brave but behind the police officers backs...

About the Pussy Riot banner...
If you really wanted to put political statement against Putin why didn`t your banner mention Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Anna Politkovskaya, Alexander Litvinenko, Mikhail Kosenko or hundreds people who really paid the price (including life)? Instead you chose to praise a band who used blasphemy to express their views and because of that gained much more enemies than friends in country like Russia? Your message will not bring any consolation to majority of interested people (those who struggle under Putin). Simple as that. I understand it feels great to do something out of order, especially on sanitized English stadiums but that was completely pointless move from political and ideological point of view.
That`s just my opinion. No need for names or anything like that. Join discussion, ask question if you like but don`t call me names in internet cause its weak.

You're missing the point somewhat mate.

Young girls being imprisoned (and one now having gone missing altogether) because they used blasphemy to express their views goes against OUR ideologies. Whether this outrageous situation was imposed by an individual, a government, or at the acquiesce of most of the population is absolutely by the by.

The Pistols used blasphemous trope aimed towards our head of state 35 years ago, during her Jubilee year no less.

The lead singer wasn't flogged. He now flogs butter on telly.

We may be a 'sanitised' country compared to many others but I know where I'd rather live.

A similar thing happened in Basel during the Basel - Schalke match last month. Basel now face disciplinary action from UEFA.

UEFA - yeah hit Schalke with a big fine, rip down banners calling for justice and tolerance - and then only pay lip service to racism. What a lovely progressive organisation of free loaders with their snouts in the trough.

That's a better banner than ours!
Not always the biggest fan of football and politics mixing, but after the behaviour of the cska fans and their club in the aftermath (which is also sadly reflective of their governments 'never happened' attitude) it gave me a lot of satisfaction to see we got that banner in the media.

To quote a massive segment of http://forums.bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=292315&start=130...
as posted, Thu Oct 24, 2013 1:00 pm... nothing has changed.

The examples are everywhere.

Just google "russia football racism" and see images... pretty shocking, and a fair whack of saluting, fruit on show, red/black/white symbolism. Awful.

Another Brazilian player, Roberto Carlos, walked off the pitch and said he considered retirement when a banana was thrown at his feet during a soccer match in Samara, Russia. Carlos was playing for the Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala. Carlos: “You know when that sadness hits, that feeling of being powerless? I left there sad, hurt. So many kids there. That has to be banned from football. When I got to the locker rooms the guys hugged me and sang for me. It was a very interesting thing. The guys on the team really like me.”

In 2010, the Lokomotiv Moscow soccer team sold Peter Odemwingie, who is Nigerian, in the transfer window. Their fans celebrated during the next game with a banner showing a banana and the message: “Thanks West Brom”. From BBC Sport: The Russian Football Union’s (RFU) disciplinary body held a board meeting on 25 August, but opted not to fine Lokomotiv and Sorokin, who is also the Russian Football Union’s director general, who insisted that the banana banner was not “racist”.

I mean after Russia's already controversial Winter Olympics 2014, they have a small footballing matter on the horizon.
Are people of different nationalities to be welcomed?
Are gays banned?

If you have mental illnesses can you watch your country?
How relaxed will VISA control be?
Will the Greenpeace protesters/Russian classed "Pirates" be free?

Russia:
Signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Ratified a number of other international human rights instruments, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (fully) and the European Convention of Human Rights (with reservations).
International law instruments take precedence over national legislation according to Chapter 1, Article 15 of the Constitution.

There have been massive changes since the collapse of the Soviet Union but attitudes, Mafias, racism, other human rights abuses are falling backwards. Perhaps UEFA and FIFA have not enough strength to contend with the might of Russia? In 4 years, much can happen, but will it?

Freedom of religion, press freedom, freedom of assembly, psychiatric discrimination are all big regional issues - alongside historic Racism and xenophobia. The World Cup can change attitudes and influence but the country and its people must show willing to want to change. Will they?
