Friends Star Matthew Perry Dies

I never loved friends the way a lot of people did but I thought he was really good and showed himself to be a proper actor in various guest roles in more heavyweight tv. West Wing, The Good Wife, Scrubs, The Good Fight - I’m sure there’s loads more on shows I didn’t watch.

The most tragic thing is how inevitable it feels that he was going to die young, it seemed he only made it into the press because he was looking terrible or had some sort of run in with the law while high. I heard on the news he had 15 attempts at rehab, and nearly died 2 years ago and 4 years ago.

I never really got why Friends was so popular but it was easy to see why people liked his character. A good comic actor and apparently a more broadly talented one too. Often seems to be the case that the funny guys are troubled souls.

Never got the whole Friends thing but he was very good in some of his later roles, especially playing sinister characters.
R.I.P Sire, a troubled soul, 54 is no age

He struggled during filming as well. If you look at him during the start of season 3 he lost a shocking amount of weight due to drugs and alcohol.

In an interview he explained he would go on set drunk or wasted and then Jennifer Aniston said to him "We want to help you" He said that really affected him as she said "we" and not "I". As they really were a family and the main cast always made decisions together. The whole cast and crew rallied around him for for that entire year when he wasn't filming he was in rehab.

At the start of season 4 he looks much better.

RIP Matthew
That’s what friends are for, if family aren’t. Sounds like they were all very close on the set and helped him during his darker days. RIP.

Truly sad to hear this news. I am someone who did watch Friends; don't think I missed an episode.

My daughters, who are 22, watched the whole series during Covid and I rewatched numerous episodes with them (and could remember watching each of those first time round). They insisted we went to see the Friends Apartment Block in NYC this summer when we were on holiday.

Whether you like the programme or not, it is a cultural phenomenon. It was so well done and it was often very funny. Perry contributed greatly to that and there will be a big outpouring of grief at his passing.

R.I.P. Matthew.
