This sort of work interests freelance people or those who want something that stands out on their CV and isn't too worried about the pay.
For example the likes of the BBC is full of people who do this sort of thing. They take the hit in terms of wage and uncertainty because they know getting BBC on your CV is a big deal and helps you climb the ladder.
