Fullbacks v Chelsea could be make or break

Swap Milner and Silva (the gaffer isn't about to start giving up on his philosophy of inside/out wingers just to suit a particular game!), and bet your bottom dollar that's exactly what you'll see...

Especially if AJ plays tomorrow night...

I agree... i went for that because if we're under the cosh; 4-4-1-1 with Milner slipping into RM, Barry LM would give us more protection across the pitch.

Silva on the right may leave us a little exposed, although i'd expect to see NDJ out there helping out.

I have a feeling this game may well be decided before a ball's been kicked.

I'd play SWP on the right as he'll help contain cole, cole is a real threat. I think we should go out and get at them as there defence apart from cole isnt exactly brillant. We beat them twice last year and since then we've improved and they've stayed the same. I'm confident we can get a result

I shouldn't imagine that we'll be seeing Boateng pitched in against Chelsea unless he gets a run out tomorrow night.
I might be slow but I'm sorry - I simply don't understand people's theories about Mancini "saving" him for this, that or the other match. Surely, the one thing Boateng needs a good dose of (assuming he is on the verge of fitness) is game time?
Personally, I rate Zabaletta a little bit more than some others seem to do. He's not a natural left back, adittedly but he'll do a job there aginst most teams.
Greg Cunningham will probably play left back against WBA. No matter what he does, I can't see Mancini chancing him against Chelsea, though. Then again, I couldn't see Boyata togging out for the semi-final, last year, but he did. So hey, you've just wasted two minutes of your life reading my know-nothing meanderings. Sorry...

Its more about their full-backs imo, if we give them the time and room to get forwards then they will. Throw a player forward and it gives them something to think about.

Boring old 4-5-1 for me. We don't need lines of defence (Like a 4-2-3-1) as they have no real dribblers who'll beat a man, we need to be more wary of their movement. To combat that I'd play a very narrow back four leaving no gaps for Malouda/Kalou to exploit between the two CBs. Try to frustrate them early on, will be a strange feeling for them.

Not sure about Zab, while he'd probably do a job on Anelka I doubt he could deal with Kalou for the whole game and would end up needing to come off (Or be sent off) at some point. Then again we have no real options. Obviously Micah on the other side, been immense as of late and a big help with balls into the box. Toure and Kompany goes without saying.

Love the man but I feel Barry is the one to miss out, we need energy all over the field and unfortunately I don't think he has it. The only other game he would miss would be Arsenal, and Villa/Brum away. So it's no slight on the man, just think this game will pass him by too easily. Instead I'd have Milner lining up against Essien, De Jong against Lampard and Toure to cause Mikel the problems.

On the wings it's a delicate balance, without doubt Johnson needs to be lining up against Ferreira. If that doesn't happen I'll be nigh on devastated; by far their weakest link. Then regretfully Tevez alone up front. Importantly I think SWP wide right, he's always done well against Cole and we could do with his pace on the counter. In the later stages of the game I'd bring Silva on, I'd be quite happy seeing the game to 20 minutes to go before we really "have a go" but that doesn't mean we can't counter attack with pace. They've looked very vulnerable to this in the past.

for me Zab is fine at LB. In fact, I'd even prefer him at RB than Richards, if we had a proper LB fit.

But it does show you how unreal our strength in depth is when we can so many able to play at left-back, arguably the hardest position to find players for:

1. Kolarov
2. Bridge
3. Lescott
4. Zab
5. Barry
6. Milner

Hasn`t Barry played at LB in emergencies before??

Yep, didn't he play part of the game v Sunderland there?

Bit mad that.

Full backs don't win games.

They add to them.

As do strikers getting busy in midfield and midfield getting busy up front and at the back.

It's very complex and natural at the same time.

Peas.

Why do we always get a load of injuries in one position. Problem last season at the back was that we seemed to pick up a knock every week and couldnt get a settled back 4. First 4 left back options (Kol,Bridge,Boateng,Lescott) being injured takes the p**s, doubt any pundits will mention the fact we're missing half a team. I like Zab but I just don't think he's quick enough to deal with someone of Anelka/Kalous quality and this could be vital.

Cole is the bigger danger, Micah needs to be right on his game along with the help of the winger in front him whoever it may be, Cole needs 'slowing down' early in the game if you get my meaning :-)
