Further To The Coffee Thread

At work, I've no access to a cooker so can't use my stove top coffee maker. I haven't got a machine and if I did I would not be taking it to work :-)

There is a Starbucks onsite, but I'm not paying nearly £2 for a double espresso. The coffee vending machines are rank. So....

I've got access to hot water, a pack of Lavazza espresso and a cafetierre. However, even after loads of trial and error, I'm not getting the coffee right. I know how daft this may sound but the coffee, no matter how much or how little is used (including the amount of water used) just doesn't taste like a good espresso should.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Someone in work has one of those cafetiere things and I have never, ever tasted a good cup of coffee from it. I posted on the other thread that I had one of those Philips Senseo machines in my office, and you can pick them up quite cheap now. Although I always thought the coffee was good, it does not compare favourably with the Bialetti stove top machines, but is a lot better than the cafetiere stuff.

-- Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:02 pm --

Shouldn't this be in the Nasri thread...?
fucking quality......go on, post a link on there and see how long it takes for the word 'BAN' to be used!

Hahaha! Nice one.

Cheers for the other post too; guess it's just how it is with cafetierres then.

Start by purchasing a grind dedicated to a cafetierre,Lavezza is far too generic, however, the reality is,you will never achieve the quality of brew you get from an espresso machine.

Will give that Starbucks stuff a go then and if that fails, I'll hunt out something made for cafetierres. Cheers to all for the advice.

I use an Aeropress, the whole thing costs about £20.

If you want frothy milk then I use a milk frothing jug: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bodum-1446-Latt ... B000BZ6BXE.

I use cheapo stong coffee - I think it's about £4 for two bags as it's always on offer in Morrisons. It is trial and error to judge how much coffee you need, but I think it tastes better than cafetiere coffee. You also get a nice crema if you do it properly, although obviously not as much as you would with an espresso machine.

Here's where I first found out about the Aeropress: http://www.hasbean.co.uk/products/Aerob ... Maker.html
