Gabriel Jesus - 2017/18 performances

I guess you havn't watched Mbappe this season then. He's not the same style of a player as Jesus but I'd argue that Mbappe already is one of the best strikers in the world. He's been playing on the wing for PSG and has been absolutely phenomenal. Imo they are both astonishing talents with Mbappe edging it for me atm but they are close. To say that Jesus is far better is pretty arrogant tbh and shows that you havn't watched PSG/Mbappe this season.

Mate, you're surely not watching Mbappe if you're referring to numbers only. He has improved compared to last season. He plays as right-footed RW both in PSG and France (that explains his stats) and often outshines Neymar and Griezmann. You definitely should watch his compilations at least, his vision, awareness and decision-making is almost Messi level. He's that good, and he's getting better. Not taking anything from Jesus.

I haven’t seen much of him but it’s not only that. Mbappe isn’t yet proven on international. To say he is much better than Jesus is ridiculous.

But let’s not turn this thread into a Jesus Vs Mbappe argument :)

When Gabriel was called to the national team for the first time not a while ago, Brazil was totally lost. We were in the road to an early elimination. After he joined, Brazil team has clicked and we didnt loose an official game since then (including an olympic gold medal for the fist time, and winning the south american Qualifiers beating messi, cavani, soares etc etc, with Gabriel being one of the protagonists. I dont think you can say the same about MBape.

Mbappe is insane player, I don't think Jesus is far off, but Mbappe at the moment is a better play. However Jesus may end up being on top in the next 2-3 years, he's under the right manager, while PSG will be in and out and Neymar will try to hog most the spotlight at PSG.

Just seen that despite being in the final 3 nominees for the golden boy award he finished 4th behind Rashford?.
Weird isn't it?

Like every single other player award, these things are a publicity contest. There's not a single major award given out by a panel of professional judges per se these days.

As such, it came down to hype and publicity. So in the end it was the case is that Mbappe ran away with it. Then Dembele, and then another gap to the rest led by Rashford. Which is how they'd rank in terms of hype and publicity.

Something that works a bit against Jesus, as far as public perception is concerned, is that for a youngster he's not the most exciting on the eye.

Most exciting young players, such as the likes of Mbappe, Dembele, Rashford, Sane etc gain credence due to a certain explosiveness about them. Traditionally young players that garner interest have a lot of pace, skill, and technique and tend to use such abilities as their first option. They're very 'raw' in that sense.

Jesus doesn't lack those qualities, he certainly has it in him to be the explosive type. It's just those are not the qualities that define him. Unlike most other top young players he tends to play with a great deal of maturity about him.

His greatest strengths include his work ethic, his link up and hold up play, his positioning and movement, and confident finishing abilities. But the thing is that, if you watched him prior to City you'd think his main strengths included his dribbling, his flair, and his goalscoring variety (as well as the other things). The point is that as a City player, and to a slightly lesser extent a Brazil player (from what I've seen), he actually sacrifices some of his more 'out there' abilities for the sake of the team. He has the maturity and intelligence (and possibly inspiration, having Pep and Tite as managers goes a long way for a young player) to do what's best for the team and unfortunately for the public that means not always doing the pretty stuff.

People (ITV mainly) get excited by Rashford because he'll to try take a guy on with his pace, throw in the odd stepover, and he'll go for the shot or wonderpass when he can, whether it works or not. Because it's exciting and fresh. Jesus would probably just lay it back off to someone and be on his bike getting into the next position.

Jesus does get a lot of credit in the public eye to be honest, definitely when you're not comparing his hype to the others. But he's never going to be held up to the highest level in that sense as right now he subdues his flair somewhat to help the greater cause.

The truth is though is that whilst we might bemoan Jesus losing to Rashford there are plenty of other less 'sexy' players that lost to Rashford too, that are also more deserving of greater credit, such as Donnarumma (5th) for starters.

But we need to remember again that these are all publicity contests. It's why players like Silva or Aguero never get any credit, except for the several ironic times a year people turn around and say they never get any credit; yet when it comes to voting season, they never get any credit. It's why the winners of all the major individual awards, have played for the side to either have won the CL or the Euros or the World Cup. Or the PFA awards here always go to the PL winners (except in 2012 or 2014 weirdly enough).

Much agreed. Good post

^^ Great post.

For his age, Jesus is one of the most mature and rounded players I've seen. If you didn't know him, you'd think he's had 10 years under his belt.

Does those little things consistently that takes years to develop for most other players

Excellent post this.

I was away with a few mates in Benalmadena the other weekend, all football fans. One is a Derby fan so doesn't watch loads of top flight stuff, and when I was naturally raving about Jesus, he questioned just how good he is. He obv knows he's good, but was unsure exactly how good as he's not as 'flashy' as some of his counterparts. As above, I said large parts of his talents (intelligent pressing, great link up play, movement, selfless play for the team) won't make the average highlight reel, and that he plays with a maturity that belies his age. If he stays with City for a decade he could smash all records along the way.

Of course he goes and scores 2 vs Stoke the next day and I can take the piss, saying to the others that he was labelling him as shit the night before :)
