I fully expected the writer to be a Brit, but obviously he's not, sooo...

Why use Brits in the fantasy when Yanks would do the same job?!

It's a fantasy and you forego the accents after a while, don't you..?

Was it simply about location and cost?

I think it's about authenticity. You can see that ASOI&F is hugely influenced by Tudor Britain and War of the Roses for example, so it makes sense to have actors/locations that can credibly carry that off, which I don't think the Americans would do quite so well.

The American accent is so bad in fantasy films, things like season of the witch etc make me cringe, the guy who plays Tyrion is from new york.

America is a new country and even in a fantasy world I expect the viewers would more readily accept an accent from an old country like England rather than a new one like America.
We're also flavour of the month in Hollywood at the moment.
At least the northerners talk like English northerners, can you imagine how ridiculous it would sound if Ned Stark had been played by someone who spoke like Tony Curtis or if Joffrey sounded like Honey Boo Boo.

I like to think of Winterfell as Manchester for some daft reason as things are not exactly the same in Westeros. Personally I'd put the Freys somewhere in the midlands.

EDIT: Stoke can be the Freys, they're a bunch of inbreds cunts anyway that have a river running through their city.
