Why use Brits in the fantasy when Yanks would do the same job?!
It's a fantasy and you forego the accents after a while, don't you..?
Was it simply about location and cost?
I think it's about authenticity. You can see that ASOI&F is hugely influenced by Tudor Britain and War of the Roses for example, so it makes sense to have actors/locations that can credibly carry that off, which I don't think the Americans would do quite so well.
