Amazing how far it's come in 11 years. Looks like 2023/24 will be the first time in a long time that academy players will represent the club over 100 times over the season.

I didn't include players who arrived at 18 and/or playing professionally for another club. Iheanacho, Garcia, Perrone etc.

And if anyone wants to compare to the gold standard - Pep's 2011/12 Barcelona team had 584 appearances from La Masia players.

Cracking post mate, cheers for sharing. Used to be very critical of academy involvement but ive not been bothered for a long time as it just *felt* better and much more reasonable, especially considering how good City are these days too. It's lovely to see it mapped out like that. I'll share on socials if you don't mind!

Really good post which does show a steady progression. It would be really interesting to see these stats from the point at which City first had a youth team. My guess is that the 88/89 promotion season would have the most appearances by youth team players ever - 293 by my count.

There were some players during the Pellegrini era that should of played more senior football, they was kept around playing u21s too long.

Puts to bed the 'Pep doesn't play academy players myth'

Be interesting to see how many CFA players are playing league football across European leagues. Could easily quadruple that and significantly has improved football across many clubs.
