Games you went to... but didn't!

Brazil v Bulgaria at Goodison Park in the 1966 World Cup Finals.

We set off for Liverpool (with tickets) on my Lambretta Li150 scooter only to collect a puncture in the west of Manchester. I did not have a spare wheel. We managed to get to Maine Road in time to watch the match at the City Social Club. Brazil won 2-0 with two great free kicks from Péle and Garrincha. That was Brazil's only win in the competition.

We made it to all the other North West group matches including arguably the finest match I have ever seen when Hungary beat Brazil 3-1 and when Portugal kicked Brazil off the park winning 3-1 both at Goodison.

Villa away - possibly a Boxing Day or certainly near to it. Was waiting for a lift that never showed up. Panicked and jumped into my Datsun 120Y and hurtled down the M6.

Got to Villa Park, wondering where to dump the car and thought "seems unusually quiet for a matchday".

Game had been called off due to a frozen pitch.

What a prick I am.
Think that may of been New years day 80 or 81.I got the special and was told at WOLVERHAMPTON it was off come straight back to town

I was on the same train, it carried on to Villa, was met by the local old bill who ensured everyone stayed on and then headed back in the direction we had come from. Complete waste of a day out in the feckin' cold.....
Yeah that was the one

Brentford years ago in the cup. Day off work, lovely weather travelling down, parked up round the corner from Griffin Park only to be told the match was off. Thought we`d best double check, saw a load of coppers, started moaning to them, only to be told to shut up as they were Manchester police who`d come down with "us cnuts", he then proceeded to tell us that his wife had given him major grief etc as it was her birthday etc, etc & if we didn`t "fuck off" he`d arrest us. Got to the ground where we were given a free programme & the food from the hospitality. Had a couple of pints & drove home. Gutted.

mine was brentford in the cup too - the late 80's tie when we got beaten two or three one. went ticketless and remained ticketless so spent an afternoon in one of the boozers right near the ground

Pre season in Denmark a few years back versus Aarhus(sp).
Flew to Copenhagen but that's as far as i got,Aarhus was a good few hours from there so did the Carlsberg brewery tour and watched thr match in an Irish bar.Fantastic place though is Copenhagen with some bang tidy clunge.

Spurs away in mid 90's, stayed at a mates flat in london who was at uni then caught the train up to white hart lane.

As we started walking towards the ground we suddenly noticed everyone else was walking towards us.

Game was off with a waterlogged pitch, saw pictures of ground on telly later and looked like a river running round the pitch!

Only once when the football was unwatchable under Pearce. I'd been on the beer for hours and a couple of us in Mary D's thought "fuck it" and watched it in there. We didn't score...

Something similar to me, but i did make it into the ground v Sheff Utd under Pearce. Me and a couple of mates just stayed on the concourse for the entire second half, having a pint and a laugh. We couldn't even be arsed to watch the match on the TV screens in the concourse. Ended up drinking with Sheff Utd fans on train on the way home.

I came so close to jacking in going to the games that season.

I think the Blades match was a 0-0. Sheffield United parked the bus and we didn't have the fire power to break them down.

Crewe away late December one year in the thrid division (as us old twats call it).
Had our works xmas do the night before, absolutely wasted in London, missed my stop at Southampton on the way home and got off in Poole, waited for the next train back, got in at 2-30am, had to be up again at 6!

Was sick as a dog all the way up to Crewe the next morning, as we parked up near the ground, the fkn game got called off!! Frozen pitch....

By then I had recovered enough to have a few beers to make the trip at least worthwhile, then the old bill came into the boozer and shut it down telling everyone to fuck off back to Manchester!

All that way in that state for one fkn pint!

Was also at the Brentford non-match, and was having a few beers in the pub when a load of Chelsea fans stormed in kicking and punching anything that moved. Cnuts.

-- Wed Oct 17, 2012 8:28 pm --

Sept 19th 1989.... lost 2-1, I was at that one too, remember a load of pissed off Blues arriving at about half time due to trains fucking up or something. I'm sure they were happier the following Saturday.

That was one game that made me wonder why i bothered! It was freezing cold and it took a real effort to go,even though i had a season ticket,we were so dire that season.I seriously considered leaving at half time such was the lack of any form of skill or excitement and after another 45 minutes of the same i wished i had!Awful dire days!
