Gardening Thread

Yeah pretty sure that is knot weed mate, the red stems on the leaf stalks look exactly like knot weed i know, the aggressive growth, the look of the leaves. It is knot weed imo boss and needs to be sorted out with no quarter given.

I shall contact our association as a responsible tenant.
It's a sheltered housing complex with acres of communal gardens and I really do fret that this Jap weed may be moving faster than some of our older residents.
To grow at this alarming rate they must be feeding on something more nutritious than soil !

Gotcha, yeah get on to them and remember the person you speak to may think your moaning and not be aware how invasive this stuff is. You know in case it is some 20yo kid who has no idea and puts the notes of the call in the bin. I wouldn tell them not to hang around because this weather will see the rhizomes dig deep and grow hard. Every day it is left it will cost more to get rid of it be it man hours of product costs.

Good luck :-)

Taxi, that's bad luck mate. I have read about that stuff and it's horrendous. Thought I would write this little ditty for you to sing. It just might help a little. Let us know how you get on.

Turn and run!
Nothing can stop them,
Around every river and canal their power is growing.
Stamp them out!
We must destroy them,
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour.
They are invincible,
They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering.
Long ago in the Russian hills,
A Victorian explorer found the regal Knotweed by a marsh,
He captured it and brought it home.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
He came home to London,
And made a present of the Knotweed to the Royal Gardens at Kew.
Waste no time!
They are approaching.
Hurry now, we must protect ourselves and find some shelter
Strike by night!
They are defenceless.
They all need the sun to photosensitize their venom.

This weather is good for my desert orchids. Supposedly hard to grow but seemingly the trick is just barely give them enough water and that is it really. Growing them in 100% perlite as a test to, it seems they love it as a medium.

Knotweed is a twat of a weed

It needs spraying when 1m tall with water based herbicide such as glyphosate and spray the leaf

Repeat at least 2 more times

Over the winter it dies back and I recommend rock salt on the surface you will be surprised what that kills off

You should spray each time it as foliage but this can take at least 5 years

Thanks Thaksin for the information.
The heads up is that I have reported this to the housing association and it appeared to fall on deaf ears.
She suggested because it was on the river bank it would be the resonsibility of the rivers authority.
Maybe the case but It's now on file and if us pensioner typos should fall beneath a plant damaged condiminium there will be hell to play .

It's quite a pretty plant and that is the reason I guess it was imported on mass from Japan.
If the housing association does not act I will wait until winterfell and then chop down the cane stems.
I will then treat with rock salt like you suggest and spray every month with Glyphosate and we will eradicate this menace together.
I will update again in January to help others who have have been plagued by this weed.

I now have definitive confirmation that this is what it purports to be and thanks to Gabriel Tcib and many others for their kind assistance.
I was suffering last night from severe ethanol poisining but was not about to let a plant dictate the anti.
So I read that in order to defeat an enemy you must first know your enemy inside out.
There is a drop of eight foot into rushing torrents and although I could have been swept away I gathered a sprinliking of courage and some accompaning hero music and entered the belly of this beast.I had to know for sure what we were dealing with.
Call it madness or raw courage but just sometimes in life a man has to draw lines in the sand and stand up and be counted.

Here is the inside of Japanese Knotty weed.
I am not advocating you enter into it's belly the same as me because I am ex military and highly trained for the unexpected.
If you think you have it then for goodness sake seek help and stay calm ehh !

Good luck

Whatever you do don't burn the stems they fire off like fireworks

If you prove it's come from the river bank the river authorities are accountable contact local government
