£70m for Bale is beyond laughable, it's not even funny, it's idiotic. He's not even worth £50m which was the first figure being banded about coming to the end of the season. £40m is being kind.

Bale worth <£40M? Get fucking real

Highest Scoring Seasons in Premier League:

Gareth Bale £??m
Premier League Goals 2012-13: 21 (26 all comps)

Sergio Agüero £38m (Highest Reported Fee)
Premier League Goals 2011-12: 23 (30 all comps)

Cristiano Ronaldo £80m
Premier League Goals 2007-08: 31 (42 all comps)

I wouldn't pay more than £45m personally.

Or you could look at it like this:

Andy Carroll £35m
Premier League goals 2011-12: 4 (9 in all comps)

Fernando Torres £50m
Premier League goals 2011-12: 6 (11 in all comps)

Dimitar Berbatov £30.75m
Premier League goals 2008-09: 9 (14 in all comps)

According to some shitty unreliable site
Real Madrid give up on Bale
Real Madrid have given up on trying to sign Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, according to Marca.
The report claims that, while Real president Florentino Perez has given up attempting to negotiate a deal with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about a possible transfer this summer, Bale will eventually make the move to Madrid in the future.

It also claims that Spurs won’t sell the Welshman for anything less than £100 million – a fee that would eclipse the world-record transfer fee Real paid for Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009.

The article on Marca’s website says, “Real Madrid have decided to put the Gareth Bale signing on hold. After receiving yet another “no” from Tottenham Hotspur, Florentino Perez and his team have decided to call it a day and now see the signing of Bale this summer as impossible.

“Daniel Levy, the English club’s president, is not open to negotiation, and faced with such inflexibility, reaching any sort of agreement is not viable.

“He is content to stay for another year in England, despite the fact that his club will not be taking part in the Champions League. He says that he’s very thankful to Tottenham and that he’s happy where he is.

“Bale has no release clause, will not be making a transfer request, and considers that, being only 23, he has time enough to make the jump into the big time. And when that happens, he wants it to be with Los Blancos.”

Can't see it coming to us either.

Exactly. He's had 1 good season, he could still flop in another team.

He wont have another seasonlike last sedason - his transfer fee and wages would be staggering and quite frankly salary and wages borh Spuds and the player would demand would maybe at a pinch be appropriate to a top 10 world player or someone whom scores 30 plus goals a year

Decent player no doubt but he no where fucking near nor will be ever be Ronaldo or Messi

We need a striker and a decent one at that Bale is a luxury a team needs balance we have enough creative players

I hope Saints have a 50% sell on..deal.. that would be so funny.

The original deal with Spurs was for £5 million up front, to be followed by staged payments up to a potential total of £10 million. There was also originally a sell on clause - not sure how big but probably in the region of 20-25%.

But, shortly after selling Bale, Saints found themselves in deep financial trouble and in desperate need of immediate funds. So they went back to Spurs with the begging bowl and, in return for a further immediate payment of £2.5 million, they forfeited the right to any further payments and any sell on percentage.

So if and when Spurs sell Bale, Saints will get nothing.

For what it's worth, I think that there is virtually no chance that Levy will agree to sell Bale until next summer anyway.

AVB, when strongly courted by PSG, sought and received assurance that Bale would not be sold.

Paulinho was persuaded, in part, to sign for Spurs because he too was promised that Bale would be staying.

Same is apparently true of David Villa.

Bale's importance and worth to Spurs isn't restricted to his performances on the pitch. It also encompasses the attractiveness of the club to potential signings. And, crucially, to sponsors. It would therefore take a stupidly stratospheric bid to persuade Levy to piss off his manager and his new signings and to forfeit the potential commercial exploitation of such a marquee player.

So Levy says Bale is worth 100mil?
I'm sure Bale's agent will be interested in that.

A players salary surely is a reflection of his worth?

Interested to know whether we would pay Bale's agent £6m or more if we were in a position to sign him.

Bale is contracted to Spurs for a further three years. Until that period expires, Levy can place any valuation on the player that he chooses.

Bale's valuation will only dictate his wages as and when Spurs try to negotiate a new, extended contract for him. In which case, yes of course his agent will then make the same point that you are making.

That is how it works legally. Levy may have to make a new deal though if he wants a happy player.

Okay, but if my boss prevented me from leaving for a dream job, said I'm worth 100mil, but pays me like I'm worth maybe a fifth of that, - I'd be rather unhappy about that.

This will be Levys downfall. Most player move to Spurs with bigger aspirations. They can't fuck up the transfer of their most like able character.

There is no formula that determines wages on the basis of valuation.

Of course there is a correlation between the two but it is entirely informal and entirely dependent upon club and context. A £100 million rated player at City will be paid substantially more than a £100 million rated player at Spurs - for obvious reasons. It doesn't mean that either club has got it wrong.

Also, there's an implied assumption in your post that Bale is unhappy at Spurs and that they are preventing him from "leaving for a dream job" with the likes of City or Real Madrid. But we have no evidence to support such an assumption. I'm sure he'll move on eventually but, by all accounts, Bale is very happy at Spurs for now.

I'd be very surprised if a new deal isn't already being discussed - reports suggest an offer of anything between £130-170K per week.

It's doubtful whether Bale would go for that but, if not, he would have to accept that it was his choice to stay at his current wage level.

we should pay whatever it takes to get bale, the guy is unreal, would win us the league

I suspect he would, but it won't happen. I don't think anyone at the City hierarchy thinks any (maybe except one or two) player is worth as much money as Levy would demand.

Bale was an idiot for signing the last contract. If he hadn't signed, next season he could have bought out the remaining 2 years around 9M
