Gareth Southgate knighted

This is bollocks.

England matches have been getting large TV viewing figures long before Southgate became manager but just because a lot of people are watching an event on TV at the same time doesn't mean there's peace and harmony across the land and everyone's singing Kumbaya together.
No, instead of that they set off fireworks after every win and upset animals.

Good post, the media narrative that we were all unified as a nation wanting them to win after Brexit got on my tits, even more than in 1999 in which the whole country wanted the European Cup to go to Ragville.

They definitely have say, whoever decided on this is someone who is involved with them who doesn’t understand football.

It's the government of the day that dish out gongs not royalty. You can always go and live in Ireland and watch them hand out gongs because what you don't like here they want a piece of over there.

I know I am in a small minority here but while yes he ultimately fell short, I have an abundance of respect for what Southgate did on a diplomatic level. There's a lot of revisionism here - for several years during his tenure he genuinely brought the country together and restored a healthy kind of national pride - something all our politicians could never achieve, and nor has any England manager in a long time.

Whether that deserves a knighthood isn't really for any of us to say, but there is a lot to like about Waistcoat. It's not about rewarding failure, it's about service, and nobody can criticise Southgate for his lack of service. He represented the country at the highest level on the international stage with class and dignity and that deserves to be recognised.

He is a proper gentleman in a sport awash with flashy arrogant cunts and there's a lot to be said for that.

He probably isn't an elite level football manager or coach, but IMO we could do far worse than putting him in charge of the FA for example, or even in a role at the DCMS.

Well said, worked wonders with England, bought through so many youngsters, often we had the youngest squad in tournaments, led us to 2 major finals and like you say bought togetherness within the camp at all times - along with being a decent human being.

shame the abuse he had to get and still continues by the hate mob online.

He certainly shouldn't have been knighted while he was still in work.

Why? I would imagine 90% of people knighted are still doing the thing they get knighted for when the receive the award.

The man was in football for 42 years before getting knighted for services to football. It's not like he didn't put in the time. His standing in the game didn't really change after 2000.

Because it affected how he was treated (In my opinion). I believe, he got away with saying things that others wouldn't have, because he was knighted. This isn't particularly against him, I believe any awards for football should only be given after the person has left football.

Lots of leaders in other fields, particularly Business, Politics and Public Service are Honoured whilst still in their roles. Why not sports figures. As someone else has pointed out the GPC did enjoy unprecedented success with that lot. If he doesn’t deserve a Knighthood nobody does (which is another argument altogether).

So, he did his job for which he was richly, as the highest paid international manager, rewarded for
He "brought through many youngsters" he picked them that's all wasn't hard. They were developed by their clubs
Got us to 2 finals and lost being fortunate to have the easiest route on both occasions, one final being on home ground despite that he failed and was beaten by an inferior squad but a far better manager
He's a decent human being, so are the vast majority of people
He managed to get England relegated mirroring his club record, he's won nothing and rewarding him with a knighthood is rewarding failure because that what he did failed
Why isn't Pep being honored with an honorable knighthood after his achievements?

Because he’s not a citizen of a Commonwealth country.

Deserves some form of recognition for the English game though and hopefully he gets one.
