You don't do it just for that reason. But say,
hypothetically, the club knows that Kolo will leave in the summer and they've decided that Savic needs to be loaned out for the year because he's not yet at the stage we need him to be.
That would leave us needing two CBs for next season. You could make a case for bringing forward the recruitment of one of them to now if there's someone available on the cheap because he'd be on a Bosman in the summer.
As it happens, I'm not Cahill's biggest fan. But if we were to go for him now, then the logic would be something like this rather than just needing someone for four games.
